Weeks are flying by and I don't have much to show for it.

I've been busy painting the main rooms of the house and now that the painting it done I have a few projects I'd like to finish before I show of the new paint job.

To tide you over I thought a few pretty garden pictures might help!!!  haha

Candles, Candles and More Candles

What's my favorite time of the day?  So glad you asked.

It's that hour or so before I go to bed each night.
The kids are all tucked into bed and sleeping peacefully.

All the lights in the house are turned off and the living room glows from candlelight.

You'll find me most evening reading on my Kindle Fire snuggled up on the sofa, surrounded by flickering candles.  Relaxed. . . enjoying the silence around me . . . it's blissful.

House Lantern

Galvanized Metal House Lantern

From the first time I saw these amazing galvanized house lanterns I've been smitten.
Christmas Zinc Tea Light Houses

Aren't they amazing.

While at the thrift store I spied a small green, glittered metal house and snatched it up.  After sanding off all the glittler I painted it black.

Once spray painting season comes around again I may give it a brushed nickle finish instead of the black.

For now, this tiny house is filling my need for one of those galvanized beauties.

Talk to you soon,
Robin

DIY Candle Sconce

I've been obsessed with candles lately and have been looking for the perfect candle wall sconce to place on either side of my large living room window.   I wanted something oversized and rustic to fit in with the farmhouse feel I'm trying to obtain.  A candle scone seemed like the perfect farmhouse accessory.

Useful, simple, pretty ... the essence of farmhouse living.

After a rather long, unproductive search I decided I'd have to make my own.

With country gumption fueling my need to get it done I searched through my stash of odd sized wood.

First I cut a 1x10 into the shape I wanted.

Next I found some scrap trim and 1xSomethings and cut them all to the size I wanted to make the candle shelf.
Attaching the two pieces together finished the project.  After painting and hanging the candle sconces on the wall I thought it was a little boring so I added a chicken wire hurricane painted black for a little extra farmhouse flare.  The hurricane was made by simply molding the chicken wire around a large tin can, cutting off the access and twisting the edges together to hold it's shape.

I love the result.  Very farmhouse if you ask me.

Hope you have great day,
Robin

A Little Something Red and Pink

Happy Valentines Days!

Do you have big plans?
Were keeping things low key around here.  I'll be hosting a lazana dinner for my sister and her family plus few small gifts for the kids.

Yesterday I finally forced myself to dig through the box of decorations I pulled out over a week ago.  I don't know why it seemed like such a chore this year.  Normally I love decorating for Heart Day since I love red and white with a passion.  Sadly, this year I have other things like paint colors on my mind and have found it difficult to pull my attention away.

I'm enjoying the simplicity of this years decorations.
It fits my state of mind perfectly.

Enjoy your day, and make sure you give someone you love a big ol' hug and a sloppy smooch!!!

Adding Display Space

In the family room we have a small wall between two doors, one door leads to our storage area, the other a bathroom.  I thought was the perfect spot to place a small shelf that needed a new place to hang out.

Plus it gave me a little more display space.
The bottom shelf has a rusty black metal box which I use to hold my classic movies.

The top shelf has a blue toolbox holding some of my favorite lace trimmed table runners  and napkins.  Plus few other current favorites.

On the top I place a large lantern and my collection of vintage toy phones.

Above I hung my latest shadow box creation.

Have a great day.  See you soon,
Robin

The Great Paint Debate

There's a paint color battle raging at our house.
Hubby wants color . . . .
I want creamy white!
One thing we both agree on ...
the yellows got to GO!!!!!
Here's a photo one of the kids took around Christmas time of the Living Room.

We have this same color on all the walls in the main rooms of the upstairs which includes the kitchen, living room/dinning room, hallway and entryway.
It's been a great color but after three years I'm ready for a change.
I love the color (Milk Paint by Behr) on the walls in the Master Bedroom. . .

It's so relaxing and I love the way whichever color I choose to accent with pops.  Hubby on the other hand has never been a fan which makes me hesitate to paint a big chunk of the house this color however much I would like to.
My vision for our house is a light filled, cheerfully and comfortably decorated space with pops of my seasonal favorite colors along the lines of something like this . . .

All the above rooms have white walls, rustic or vintage flare and pops of color.
Love, love, love it.  Plus it's very similar to our bedroom which I like.

But then since hubby's not crazy about the white walls (calls it boring) I've broadened by focus a tiny bit.

Maybe creamy tan walls should be the direction to move towards.  It would probably make hubby more happy and I could still use pops of color.

If the decision were up to you. . . . what would you do?
Would you pick the white that makes your heart sing and puts a smile on your face
or
would you pick the tan color which would be a little more "family friendly"?

Please help this poor girl make up her mind.  Would love to hear about any paint colors that have worked for you.

Adding Storage To A Small Bathroom

Our master bathroom is small . . . tiny in fact and storage has always been an issue.
The past few years two basic shelves provided a simple storage solution.  However I found the open shelves difficult to use.  Items were constantly falling off and it just wasn't very pretty.
I decided it was time to come up with a more permanent solution.  I wanted the convenience of open shelves but the security of a cupboard.  I searched high and low for inspiration but in the end I had to take matters into my own hands.
After a trip to the hardware store I was able to build the perfect enclosed cabinet to install onto the wall and tripled our storage space.

The cabinet is basic in it's construction so I dressed it up with curves and moulding.

It all came together so quickly I'm wishing I would have done this years ago.

Keep reading and I'll walk you through the steps of how I put it together.
To make the shelf I used ...
3 - 1x10
2 - 1x4
1 - 1x2
molding/trim
I first cut the two sides of the shelf to the length I wanted.
Next, using a jigsaw, I cut a decorative edge to the bottom.

I then cut the three shelves to length.
Two of the shelves I also cut off a half inch on back side to enable the shelf to sit inside the frame.
Once all the cuts were made, I predrilled holes and using screws attached each shelf to the two side pieces.

Once again with a jigsaw, I cut a decorative edge to the two 1x4's.
One was attached to the front of the top shelf.
The other was attached at the back of the bottom shelf.
The one 1x2 was attached at the back of the top shelf to be used to mount the shelf to the wall.

The next step was to add molding to the top of the shelf . . .

And trim to the front of the bottom two shelves.

Finally bead board was added to the back.

Like a said, very simple construction.  It didn't take me more than an hour to but together.

After a coat of white paint and hubby's help hanging it I love how it looks.

Hope you all have a lovely day,

Robin

The Kitchen Window

I've changed my kitchen windowsill display around this morning and thought it was the perfect way to share with you some new purchases that I'm very excited about.

First at the thrift store I found this small gravy boat which I fell in love with right away.  It's the perfect addition to my collection.  I have my daughter to thank for the tiny silver spoon.  She found it for me in a bin of state souvenir spoons.  I can't wait to use it next time we have a dinner party.  It will be perfect for adding a little something vintage to the table.

I have Micheal's to thank for my next find.  When I ran in for a few supplies the other day I noticed the plant cloches were marked down to 40% off.

Isn't the chicken wire fabulous?  I just love it.

The base is metal and although I'm not crazy about the color I still love it.  Once it warms up enough to spray paint here in Minnesota I may give it a little black paint.  I'm on the lookout for the perfect plant to add, but for now a flamless candle with some red and white bakers twine wrapped around it is the perfect thing to add a little winter warmth to the kitchen.

Grouped together with a stack of plates and another creamer from my collection, the new finds make a very pretty display in the kitchen.

Simple.  Easy.  Pretty.
The best kind of display if you ask me.
until tomorrow,
