Silver Deer

Hello There!

Like many of you I've been having a delightful time digging through boxes - and boxes, of Christmas decorations.  Decorating for Christmas is so much fun isn't it.  This past Saturday I cranked up the holiday tunes and made a complete disaster of the house until the wee hours of the morning.  I worked happily, humming along until all my displays were arranged.

This week has flown by as I dug out my craft and sewing supplies.  I've made a happy mess of the house again working on ornaments and various crafty items I wanted to add to my displays.

I'll be showing them off in the coming weeks but today I wanted to share one of my first quick projects.

You all know my fascination with Glitter Houses this time of year, but can you guess my second obsession?

It's Reindeer.

It started years ago with a simple hand-me-down treasure from my mom.  The fascination has grown yearly.

So much so that I'm looking for reindeer in the thrift shops all year long.  Like these two example I picked up in July.  They were perfectly wonderful, but I'm not really in to the whole brassy thing.

A quick coat of white paint and sprinkling of silver glitter makes them fit right in with the whole winter wonderland / red and white theme I have going on this year.

Much better and so much more adorable - -  don't you think?

Talk to you soon,

Robin

Sweet Surprises

I can't tell you how many times I've uploaded photo's from my camera and found goofy surprises from my kids.

Do your kids swipe your camera too?

The swiping is on an all time high around here and I thought it would be fun to show off a few of my favorites.

My eldest daughter captured some beautiful photos of a red sunrise through our front window.

I think it's very pretty even if the it's slightly blurry.

My youngest daughter is constantly taking silly face pictures of herself.  They always make me laugh.

And my middle daughter likes to take sweet smiling photos of herself.

A Hankering For . . . Glitter Houses

If you've been around since last Christmas you'll know how much I love glitter houses.

If your newer to   Happy At Home   let me introduce you to my Christmas Time Obsession .  .  . Glitter Houses!

I have quite the collection of houses I've made myself and a few that I have purchased.  Personally I love the ones I make more than the others.  I find such joy in cutting, painting and glittering them that I don't think I'll ever give it up.

Here are a few that I made for Christmas last year. . .

My glitter house creations are humble in comparison to examples I find elsewhere, but that's OK, the joy is in the crafting and displaying.

So what do you think?

Need some more convincing?

I can help you with that!  Take a look at few more examples I've found . . .

I fear my hubby is dreading the glittering storm to come.  Twice already this past week I've had the dinning room table cluttered with some project or another and the look on his face when he groans "OH, NO, it's not glitter house time yet!!!"  is priceless.  I always remember to respond with a sweet "No, not yet sweetie" - - I'm such a naughty wife.

Hopefully this years plans won't take over the house as in years past.  You see I'm going to try my hand at miniatures this year.  I think they are lovely and hope I have a talent for them also.

Here are a few of my favorite examples . . .

Have a lovely day,

Robin

A New Shelf for the Dinning Room

I have been wanting to update the shelves in my dinning room for a while now and a recent trip to the thrift store scored the perfect solution.

For many, many years I have used two sets of Ikea picture ledges to showcase a collection of framed prints and small items.  I have loved the look, however the narrowness of the ledge was a constant source of frustration.  It's very hard to find pretty items to display which are less than two inches wide.  Here is what the wall looked like last week.

And this is how it looks today.

The mantel like shelf was found at the thrift store and then painted and distressed.  I hung two frames on either side of the shelf to add balance.  And because I hung the shelf high enough that the kids couldn't bump it, I hung a hand lettered sign below the shelf to help the display blend downwards towards the dinning table.

In the middle of shelf I added a silver platter, two vintage clocks and a footed pedestal bowl filled with faux white roses.

On either side of the flowers I placed a small stack of books and a grouping of flameless candles.

And just because I love the way this vignette turned out, here's  another photo.  LOL.

It always amazes me how a quick, simple change-a-roo can have such an effect on a room.  I have to say I'm loving the results.

The Thanksgiving Table

Good Morning!

I thought today would be a wonderful time to share how I plan to set the table for this years Thanksgiving Gathering.

My plan is to keep things nice and simple with plenty of room on the table for the main event - the yummy food!

I layered a simple drop cloth table runner over a white linen tablecloth and placed a single candelabra in the middle of the table.

One each side I place a silver gravy boat fill with white roses.

My everyday white china was dressed up with simple white napkins and a silver frame.

I've had a handful of these silver frames for a couple of years and have used them in many different ways around the house.  I think this is the best use for them yet.  I love the sparkle they add to the table.

Simple scrap booking supplies, a set of alphabet stamps and a single accent stamp was all that was needed to turn them into place cards.

Now that I have all the fun stuff done for the big day, I guess that means I have to get to the not-so-fun stuff like cleaning the house.  Sigh ... If only I had a maid.

Pass the Gravy Boat Please

I'm not sure what it is about gravy boats that get me all fired up but somehow they do.  Even more so when it's a nicely tarnished silver one.

I added this beauty to my collection recently.

I love it's chunky base and the ribbing along the top not to mention the pretty gracefully handle.

I have quite a few gravy boats in my collection, although I never seem to actually fill them with gravy.

Instead they are filled with an assortment of items like candles, bottle brush trees, silverware, flowers, and like now mini pumpkins.

Hope you have a great day,

This Is Crazy . . .

Am I the only obsessed person who can't walk past a Christmas Magazine without buying it?

I've picked up these three in the past two weeks and I'm itching to get started decorating.

I have a very firm rule though:  No Christmas Decorations until November 24th.

I give myself one day to relax after Thanksgiving and then you can't stop me.

I do however start working on my Christmas crafts in November!

Ornaments,
Glitter houses,
Garland,
You name it I'll be starting next week.

How about you?

Robin

p.s. If your thinking of picking up the Christmas Cottages Magazine I'd skip it unless you like a lot of dark wood finishes and rustic settings.

Tween Room Makeover

Over the past month my eldest daughter and I have slowly been working on transforming her room into a space that she would like to hang out in.  I can't tell you how much fun this project has been for me.  Finally at the age of twelve she is starting to show interest in decorating which makes me one proud momma.

She picked out the color scheme of black and hot pink.  Then together we worked on transforming her room on a very small budget.  The result is a room that she adores and has even kept clean for a week straight!!!!  Wonders never cease,  LOL!

The walls were painted a crisp bright white which she picked out.

The bedding was picked out at Target on clearance.  I just love the ruffles on the bedspread and the pillow shams.  The zebra print accent pillow were a must have to her.

I sewed a simple valance from black broadcloth and added the graphic ribbon to the bottom edge to add a pop of her accent color.

We painted the base of her dresser white and she pick a hot pink for the drawers.

To the side of her dresser we hung an oval mirror so she can easily apply her makeup and do her hair.  Above the dresser a simple Ikea ledge shelf was hung to hold all her girly essentials.  We plan to make the shelf multi-functioning by attaching cup hooks to the bottom of the shelf to hold all of her necklaces which she is currently hanging off the side of her jewelry box.

On one side of the window a grouping of "J's" painted in hot pink jazz up her initials.  The side table was brought into the room for the first time and the two drawer help keep her organized plus it is the perfect place for her new hot pink lamp.

On the other side of the window we got a little crafty with a blank canvas.  I painted the canvas in various shades of pink and then cut out the word "Awesome" from zebra striped scrapbook paper which I then glued onto the canvas.  She thought that was really cool.

On the wall at the end of her bed is her homework station and bookshelves.  Her desk was painted to match her dresser.

Above the desk, three simple shelves are hung with metal brackets to add storage space for all her books, collections and Lego's.  A simple pin board was attached to the wall between the two.  It always amazes me how much kids love pin boards.  She thought it was so cool to have it over the desk and she is constantly moving items around on it and adding new stuff.

Next to the desk area we hung a simple desk calendar from a binder clip so she could easily remove it from the wall and update her calendar.  She says she really likes having it up off the desk and out of the way but still accessible.

On the long wall along her bed we hung a gallery like collection of frames to highlight some of her favorite drawings which can grow as she wants it to. This is my favorite part of the whole room.  Her ability to draw amazes me and I love seeing some of her favorites framed and on display.  She is really liking it too.  Every few days one or more of the frames will have a new drawing.  Or in this case  a new moustache.  LOL!! I love it.

To add something fun to her room we painted her closet door with chalk paint which all her friends think is so cool.

Many drawing and saying have been wrote here since finishing this project but this one has stayed up the longest.  It's her current favorite phrase and so very "her".

Hope you've enjoy this mini tour of our newly decorated room.

Talk to you soon,

Painted Table Runner

I have been wanting to try painting a table runner for a long, LONG time.  I'm sure you've all seen this before, especially since it was featured in Country Living ages ago.  However I'm just getting around to.

I decided my new living room coffee table needed a little something special and I thought this was the perfect opportunity to give it a go.

I used leftover drop cloth fabric for the base and cardinal red craft paint.  It was so quick and easy I'm kicking myself for not doing it sooner.  Plus I love how it gives my table a "real deal" look at a fraction of the price.

After the paint dried, I popped it in the washer and then the dryer.  The stripes now have a wonderful aged look that is soft to the touch.  I feel silly showing these photos with my Halloween mice still on display but I have a nephew who loves to play with them when he comes over every day.  So the mice will stay out just a little while longer.

To finish off the runner, I simple zigzagged the edges so it wouldn't fray.  I know some people don't mind that happening but it drives me crazy.  I love how the edges now have a slightly wavy look to them.

How about you?  Have you tried this yet?

A Hankering For . . . A Wood Stove

I can't be the only one who thinks wood stoves are the ultimate in country comfort.  I dare say if I had to choose between a wood stove or a fireplace I'd choose the stove EVERY TIME.

Pinned Image

I love the way they radiate heat and make a room so cozy and toasty.

Not to mention the anticipation of warmth the scent of wood smoke gives as you finish outdoor chores on a crisp winter day.

Or how about the pretty glow the stoves give off once you turn down the lights each night.  It urges you to sit back, prop up your feet and reflect on your day to the song of subtle pops and snaps as you watch the flames skip and jump around inside.

Pinned Image

Wood stoves are also so very useful.  Besides bringing heat to a space they are so handy for a weekend breakfast with the family.  And how helpful it would be to always have a kettle full of warm water for impromptu cups of tea or hot coco.

Pinned Image

Now I have always dreamed of owning a traditional black wood stove . . .

But then I saw this red beauty and my heart skipped a couple beats.
I had no idea they sold them in different colors!

In the end, I suppose the color doesn't really matter.  It's the stove it's self that is calling out to me.
