A New Gravel Patio

I'm so excited to show off my latest outdoor project.  I've been obsessing over a gravel patio for at least a couple of years and now I can finally say I have one.  And the best part about the whole project:  Combined with the materials I had on hand this project only cost me twenty bucks.

We have a walkout basement into the backyard that is covered overhead with the deck off the dinning room.  In the past, simple sidewalk pavers made a path from the door out to the grass at the edge of the deck.  Large river rock filled in the remainder of the space below the deck and along the whole length of the house.

First I removed as much of the river rock as I could.  Next, using leftover dirt from my front yard project I leveled off the space from the edge of the deck to the end of the house which was previously very uneven and slopped.  Next came easy to use interlocking brick edging pavers to enclose the patio area.  Finally, the pea gravel was added.  This is where the twenty bucks was spent.  I ran out towards the end of my project.  Menard's was selling bags of it for $1.98 so I bought twenty dollars worth to finish off the project.

Now that all the explaining is done I can show off the results.  Sorry I forgot to take before pictures.  Just imagine a muddy dirt ring from a kiddie pool, patchy grass from not enough sunlight and kid toys thrown around.  LOL.  Now it looks like this.

Here is the view from the back door looking towards the end of the house.

Along the side of the house I did need to leave the river rock to protect the ground from runoff from the roof.  I placed two over sized buckets filled with flowers in the area to make it a little more pretty and I have to say I like the look.  I think one more bucket would make it look even better so I'm on the lookout for one.

The brick edging I used looks like this.  I've used it all over my backyard to define the garden beds.  They are about a foot long and four inches tall.

The pea gravel I used looks like this.  For ease of walking on it I kept the depth of the gravel to about one inch thick.

To make a sitting area, two chair, a vintage bistro table and an outdoor rug was place near the end of the patio.

It's the perfect place to sit and look at the backyard gardens or cozy up to a campfire.

Speaking of gardens,  I clipped the last of my Hydrangea's and pick the first of my tiny pumpkins today.

Since the evening are getting cooler, we've been having campfires in the backyard too.  I've snuggled the firebox as close to the patio as I'm comfortable with the deck and trees above this space.  I'd love to get one of those clay chimney things to add instead - someday.

To add a little decoration to the space I've added two over sized lanterns which I love to use.  I've surrounded them with small stones from my rock collection which I think adds a nice touch.

Sitting next to the back door is my collection of metal buckets.  Ready and willing to help me out if I get the sudden urge to work in the garden.  I can envision a bench or potting bench for this area in the future.

I have plans to jazz things up a little more for next summer.  Maybe add a farmhouse table and chairs or loungers, bring in some more potted plants and add a narrow garden along the outside to plant a row of small shrubs.  So many plans, I'm sure hubby will be happy.  hehehe

So there you have it.  My new gravel patio.  I love how it's transformed a previously unused space into a place the whole family can hang out at.

What do you think?

Pretty Desk Makeover

Good Morning Everyone!

I'm not sure if you remember or not but way back sometime last year I moved my daughters desk out into our living room since I loved it so much and thought it would work well in the space.

After finally talking her into painting it, the desk looks oh so pretty in a fresh coat of creamy white paint called Cottage White.

This is what it looked like when I first moved it into the living room.  No doubt it was pretty . . .

But now I think it's GORGEOUS!

The curved drawer fronts and cute little legs speak to me.  I slightly distressed a little here and there after painting and kept the original hardware just like it was previously.  I love the contrast between the white and the aged metal.

I'm loving how it turned out and how well it seems to go with my farm sign.

I decided to keep the same display you may remember seeing before with the addition of a simple lace edged table runner.  I'm still enjoying the simple arrangement and I'm hoping to use it a couple more weeks before I changed things up for fall.  I have a feeling it won't changed to much.  LOL!

Have a great day and I'll talk to you soon,

Robin

Fun Finds from the Junk Bonanza

I've been waiting to show off my Junk Bonanza finds until I've found a place for them around my house but this week I'm finding it hard to work in a little play time for me.  Instead I've just arranged them on a table to show them off.  Sorry about that.

Lets get started,

A box camera was the one item I was hoping to find, you can imagine my delight when I saw this beauty.

I can never pass up white ironstone.
One small platter and a uniquely shaped bowl had to come home with me.  Then I spotted the red and white stripped hand towels.  I try never to pass up anything red and white if I can avoid it.  I picked up four of them.

I had also hoped to find butter pat dishes.  Another surprise for me that I snatched up.  My photo doesn't do them justice.  I love the fluted edges and each and everyone as tiny cracks along its surface giving it a crackled look.  I could not be more happy with this find.

I also found some vintage book illustrations.  Here are two of the eight that I picked up.  Truth be told I'm not sure where these two prints of cheerful yellow flower will end up but I do know they make me smile and think of spring.

I have a collection of old jars and I seem to favor clear glass with etching or raised surfaces so when I spotted this tall jar with a zinc lid I knew it had to be added to my market bag.  If you look closely, the corners have a craftsmen style, vertical raised bars - if that makes sense.  LOL.  I love it.

I think a new collection has just been started with this find.  Lately I've been drawn to vintage car.  I get excited when I see one driving down the street and have even gone so far as to attend a couple classic car shows.  I couldn't pass up this photo and I'm fairly certain I'll be on the lookout for more in the future.

Of all the items found at the Junk Bonanza this last one has to be hands down my favorite.

I saw this old, chippy table and fell in love.

It's too short for adults to sit at which makes me think maybe it was used as a children's table.  I plan to use it as a coffee table after I find the courage to attempt to cut the legs down.

The wide, cracked table top boards along with the color make my heart melt.  There is a little black, red/brown, and green that shows through the white top coat.

Don't even get me started on the perfectly wonderful chipping and distressing it's acquired over the years.

I have to say no single find in years has made me grin quite like this table has.

Hubby, true to form, has shaken his head and rolled his eyes about my purchases.  I'm pretty sure I've even heard him mumble to the kids that in order to show me a good time "all he has to do is take me on a trip to the dump"

Oh, sweetie - - you know me too well.  hehehe

DIY Rustic Farmhouse Centerpiece

With the weather turning cooler by the day, my mind has shifted towards all things autumn even as my heart screams "I'm not ready".  Don't get me wrong I love autumn, it's safe to say it's my favorite season.  But I feel as if summer past by much to quickly and I didn't accomplish all that I wanted to.

Blogging and home projects were pushed to the side.  Instead I filled my days with trips to the pool, bike rides and field trips.  The girls and I had a great time.  But now it's back to work.  The girls have been in school for a week and a half and slowly . . . oh so slowly I'm getting back into the groove and I feel the urge to decorate my home for the fall.

Before getting started on that I've been quickly snapping photos of the few projects I did manage to accomplish this summer in order to show them off.

Today I'm highlighting one of my favorite projects,  a rustic farmhouse style centerpiece.  I love the way it turned out, after a month of using it I'm still loving it and almost hate to change it.

Want a look?

Maybe I'm silly but I think it's beautiful.

Candles . . .

And rocks have been my go-to decor favorite the whole summer long.

Plus I'm loving a how much the new wood looks like old barn board.  And it's quick and easy to pick up and move out of the way if project or homework space is needed.

I've layered the centerpiece above my new ruffled tablecloth and a quick and easy drop cloth runner that I simply zig-zagged the edges.  I love how it adds a tiny ruffle or texture to the edges.

The paint technique I used is also very quick and easy.
I have a tutorial on it here.

To build the centerpiece I simply took two pieces of 1X4 and cut them to the length I wanted.  Next I cut out three,  four inch section from a piece of scrap 1X2 for the legs.

After marking the center on the legs,

I simply used finish nails to attach the legs from the top.

I think the building process took me less than fifteen minutes.  The painting took another fifteen minutes tops and then I just had to wait for it to dry.

There is just nothing like a quick and easy project.  It's even better when it turns out like this.

I'm working on some ideas for a fall arrangement since I'm not ready to give it up quite yet.

Hope your all having a wonderful day, talk to you soon,

Robin

Are You Going?

Junk Bonanza

The Junk Bonanza in Shakopee, Minnesota is a day away and I can hardly contain my excitement!

I try to go every year, but sadly I miss the Bonanza last year.  I plan to it up this year by shopping HARD!

Although it starts Thursday I'm going to have to hold my excitement in a little longer until Saturday when I'm able to make it there.

Will any of you be going as well?

Oh My! Another One!!!

It seems I have a thing for bringing home lost compotes these days.  I swear I wasn't on the lookout for one.  It seems they are on the lookout for me!

I spied this glass beauty and had to have it.  I do have to admit to a tiny bit of buyers remose however.  Once I had it home, I didn't have a clue how I'd use it.  Ever have that happen?

After staring at it for a couple of days, giving it the evil eye every time I happened to pass by . . . inspiration struck.  Okay, maybe not inspiration so much as a "this is ridiculous, I've got to do something with it" moment,  I decided to stick a candle in it.

Encouraged that it fit and looked halfway respectable, off I went to dig around for something to spruce it up with.  I came up with a scrap of leftover drop cloth fabric which I cut to size. . . some white ribbon . . . and a charm from my daughters charm bracelet (shhh, don't tell her she hasn't noticed yet)

I layered the compote on top of a small oval dish.

And placed two keys I picked up at a recent flea market on the dish for added intrest.

I love this key,  I wonder what it opened way back when it as brand new?  I'm thinking maybe a trunk or luggage of some type.

Overall, I think this mini project turn out pretty fabulous considering I couldn't figure out where to start.

Enjoy your day,
Robin
