Completed Kitchen Makeover

Have you ever started on a project only to keep adding items to your to-do list until there was no clear end in sight?

That's what happened to me once I decided I couldn't put off fixing up my kitchen another day.  If your a long time follower there is a reason you've only seen bits and pieces of my kitchen.  I've only ever shown you the somewhat pretty parts and kept the ugly parts away from the camera.

Before I show you the "ugly" how about a sneak peak at the pretty finished room?

Nice right?

OK, now lets back it up and take a look at the beginning.
Be prepared for a whole lot of  U.G.L.Y.

As you can see, it's an odd shaped kitchen with two entrances.  One from the living room and one from the dinning room.  The space itself is wonderful.  The cooking area is large enough for a few people.  If I happen to have extra helpers they sit or stand on the other side of the island.

The eating area has a large window that overlooks my front yard garden and the street beyond.  The light streaming in from the window is always welcomed to keep the kitchen cheerful and bright most of the day.

As you enter the kitchen from the living room this is the view that meets you.

I adore this long, wide island.
It's the place I do most of my prep work when I'm fixing meals.  It offers me plenty of space to spread out and make big messes.

To dress it up a little, I added bead board to the back of the island and then wrapped it around the side also.  To finish, I added a nice wide trim along the floor.

Above the island my hubby replaced the nasty track lighting with a pretty new fixture from Lowe's.
Don't you just love it?

On the other side of the island is the stove and more cabinets.

I removed the doors from one of the cabinets to see how I liked open shelves.

I have to say I'm loving it.

Our most used items are within easy reach.  Plus it's fun to have a spot to display my white dishes and cutting boards.

I try to keep my counter tops as clear as possible.  I'm not a big fan of clutter.  I'd much rather see clean, clear space with only the essentials on display.  A few items always seem to make their way onto the counter but for the most part it's only what's needed.

Directly across from the stove is the sink and another fairly good sized window that lets in the late afternoon sunshine.

Hubby was a wonderful man and replaced not only my old faucet but also the light fixture above the sink.

Besides painting the cabinets, the biggest change I think was the simple addition of cabinet pulls.  We had never had them before - - it's amazing what a difference they make.

Because our cabinet fronts are so flat and plain I thought a nice chunky handle would add extra interest.  Sure enough, they did what they were supposed to do and I am very happy with the results.

The second part of the kitchen is the office/eating space.
As you enter the kitchen from the living room directly on your left is a small desk area where I keep my computer, phone and calendar.  This is my happy space where all my blog reading and writing takes place.

Right next to the desk, is a large counter area which works great for a standing desk.  Hanging on the wall next to it is my command center.  A "white" board for making shopping lists, and two hanging file baskets.  Together they keep my family and I organized.

And finally there is the eating area.

The table was a thrift store find that I refinished recently.
I love the rustic farmhouse feel it give the kitchen.

On the walls around the eating area I install bead board which I have wanted to do since the day we moved in.  I love how it gives the room more of a cozy feeling.

I am so happy I finally talked my husband into letting me paint the cabinets!
Granted the extra's like the bead board, new lighting, and a faucet I had to sort of slip in there at the last minute.  A girl's got to be sneaky!

In the end, I feel as if I have a brand new kitchen and I LOVE it.

Hope you enjoyed the tour,

Adding Some Farmhouse Style To The Kitchen

I just can't wait to share with you my new kitchen shelf this morning.

I have a small wall in my kitchen's eating area that was in need of a fresh look.  After thinking it over for a while I decided a shelf was the perfect thing to add.  Lets face it, a new spot to decorate is always a plus!

The shelf itself was purchased at Ikea.  I think this is the first shelf ever that I have not built myself.  I love how fast it went together and the cottage/farmhouse vibe it has is a big plus.

I of course filled the shelf with some of my favorite vintage treasures but before we get into all that first take a look at the prints hanging on the wall above the shelf.

Recognize them?
Yup, they're the prints the lovely Linda from Itsy Bits and Pieces sent me.  Are they not the most perfect addition to this display.  I am head over heels for them.

**sigh***
so perfect!

OK, I'll stop drooling over the cow prints long enough to show you the rest of the shelf.

I added my newly crafted chicken wire cloche that I talked about here.

The cloche is resting on a milk glass dish.
To add some height to the clock I placed a stack of butter pat dished underneath it.

What's more farmhouse like than a stack of dishes.
I was able to round up enough for two stacks, one on each side of the cloche.
I topped each with a pretty petite creamer.

You probably remember seeing these glass jar sleeves recently also.
If you missed it you can take a look here.
I added them to the mix to hold my vintage silverware collection.

And finally, I added my favorite rusty, white vintage scale and paired it with my rusty cast iron cow.  Isn't he adorable.

I love how well the shelf all came together.
I'm really loving how well it fills up that empty wall in the kitchen.
It adds a little extra charm to the space.

Have a wonderful day everyone,

Robin

A Hankering For . . . Vegetable Gardens

This week the weather has been somewhat spring-like.  Snowing, Raining, but slightly warmer in temperature.  It seems like everyone I know is holding their breath in hope that maybe, just maybe winter has finally let go of it's grasp on us and spring is ready to hangout for a while.
We hope!
All this hoping for spring has me impatiently planning my vegetable garden.  With each passing day, my plans grow larger and more grand.  I can't wait to get started.
It seems my favorite pastime lately has been looking a beautiful vegetable gardens.  Here are some of my favorite photos.

Junk Bonanza Finds

This year I had the privilege to attend the Junk Bonanza not just one, but two days.  Once by myself and once with my mother.  I had a wonderful time as  you can imagine looking for treasure to bring home with me.

What to see?

It was the year of the gravy boat for me it seems.  I love ironstone gravy boats and have been looking for them the pass couple of year with minimal luck.  I was delight to find I had my pick from many, many choices this year.  I came home with four in all shapes and sizes.

My newest love are ironstone butter pats.  I was able to find seven of them in two different styles.

Of course vintage clocks are always on my watch list so I was happy to find two more unlike any I already had in my collection.

When I saw this petite cast iron final I just knew I could find a place for it in my house.

Also found a tattered bible for a great price.

Picked up five milk caps to add to my collection.  I plan to frame them up and hang in my kitchen.

Mom spotted this light fixture globe which she thought I would love,  she was right.

I think it would be fun to display it on shelf along with some vintage books.

And finally, I purchase my very first vintage watering can.  It's sure to be the start of a collection.

Hope your all having a wonderful day,

Robin

Chicken Wire Cloche

Good Morning Everyone!

Hope you had a great weekend.  Things were busy around here.  On Saturday I was able to attend Junk Bonanza again with my mother.  We had a fabulous time.  I'm hoping to show off my newly acquired treasure tomorrow!

Today however I have yet another chicken wire project to share.

I know, I may be going a little chicken wire crazy but the stuff is sort of addicting and I'm having a great time playing with it.  While I was making the glass jar sleeves I had a some leftover chicken wire and thought I would attempt to make a chicken wire cloche too!

Cute right?

I really had no idea what I was doing.  I just sort of bent the wire a little here and there, cut off wire in other places and twisted it together in others.  If you look close you can see the seam along the backside.

In the end I think it turned out pretty good and I have to admit I sort of love it.  I brushed on some black paint to make it stand out a little more and now it has a spot on my kitchen shelf.
For the loop at the top, I twisted two pieces of craft wire together and then added it to the top of the cloche.

I was so happy with the results I decided to make another one just to see if I could.  I realize now I probably should have taken pictures to share but at the time I was having too much fun and not really thinking about blogging.

I'm pretty sure I'll be making more of these in the days to come.
I ran out of chicken wire with these two cloches.  Once I get some more I'd love to make a few that are not so tall and bigger at the base.

Have a great day and I'll talk to you soon,

Robin

Fun Finds

Morning Everyone!

Today I'd like to share a few thrift store finds that I am very excited about.

A few weeks ago I showed you my spring living room with pretty blue and greens accents.  The following week I found this metal tray and knew right away it would work beautifully in the room.

The tray itself is a little dinged and scratched in places but being a  little rough around the edges never stopped me from loving something.  Especially when the color is so very perfect.

It looks perfectly at home sitting on my chippy white table holding a bowl filled with Hydrangea's don't you think?

I was thrilled to find these Restoration Hardware enamel numbers.
Aren't they fabulous?

They are super heavy and I adore the graphic punch each one gives to a space.

I've tucked a few into my existing decor for now.  The rest will find a home soon I'm sure!

Hope you all have a lovely day.

I will be digging myself out of yet another dumping of heavy wet snow.  The view outside my window is absolutely beautiful yet it's the type of snow we love to in December not April.  I'm finding it more and more difficult to be thankful for the pretty view when all I'm wishing for is the snow to melt away to allow me to play in the garden.

Talk to you soon,

Robin
