Artful Blogging, I Thank You

If you've happened to have experienced the delight of flipping through the newest issue of Artful Blogging you may have noticed an article by yours truly!

I was thrilled to be contacted a few months back to be featured in an upcoming issue.
My excitement was quickly replaced with pure terror at the thought of writing the article.   You all know me . . . I may be a crafty girl with a green thumb but a writer I am NOT.

Most posts, I stumble through by the skin of my teeth.
I'm so thankful for each and every one of my faithful readers that encourage me along my blog journey dispute my lack of writing know-how.

In the end, my terror was replaced with excitement once again even though I joked with my hubby that the article was going to be a Hot Mess!

I am so grateful to Artful Blogging for giving me the chance to step out of my comfort zone and try something new.  It was an exciting personal adventure which I am thankful to have been given the opportunity.

Hope you all have a wonderful day,

Robin

Summer Recap

With school now underway, and homework every night I thought it would be fun to look back at our crazy, jam-packed summer!

Here are a few of the things we did . . .

Summer always seems to fly by so fast.  However it seems to be more enjoyable with each passing year as the kiddos grow older and start to share interests.  Our adventures become more grand and the time together somehow seems much more well spent.

I'll cherish the memories of Summer 2013, while waiting in anticipation to see what life as in store for us until Summer 2014.

Hope you all have a wonderful day,

Robin

Shhhhh . . . Can You Hear That?

Shhhhh  . . . Listen . . . ..

Do you hear any . . .

whining
doors slamming
arguments to break up
music or TV blaring
foot stomping
how about tantrums
or perhaps a shouted "MOM!!!"

No?

Me Either

It's blissfully quiet and L.O.V.E.  I.T.

The girls officially started school yesterday and for the first time in thirteen years I am home alone during the day.   You can bet I'm looking forward to the change.

I'm planning to take a couple days off for myself then I'm going to tackle the big job of digging myself out of the summer clutter that is surrounding me.

Have a great day,

Robin

Makeshift Clothes Line

We have been experiencing some delightful weather here in Minnesota lately.

The days are warm and sun filled.  The nights, clear skies and crisp, cool air.

It reminds me of the beginning of autumn when the days are still quite warm yet the nights are cool.

I adore this type of weather.  I hope it lasts for weeks, and weeks.

I've been inspired to hang my laundry outside to take advantage of the warm breeze.  Unfortunately, I have no clothes line since hubby is not a fan.

No worries,  this girl knows how to rough-it.

Simply stringing some clothesline between the tree and the porch posts makes the perfect spot to hang freshly washed clothes.  I wrapped it around the tree, then to one post, across to the other post and then back to the tree.
Now I have a three sided clothes line which holds almost two loads of laundry.

Sure it won't win any awards for best laundry line but I can't put in words the delight it has given me.

I love everything about the process of line drying clothes.  It may seem crazy, but I love carrying the basket of wet clothes outside, I love placing each item on the line with clothes pins, I love watching the clothes flutter in the breeze, I love folding each item and hearing the cluck of the clothes pins falling into its metal bucket.

Somehow, it's almost magical.
OK, maybe not magical but definitely delightful!

Not sure what hubby's going to say, but I'm hopping he won't notice right away.  In the meantime, I'm enjoying the scent of line dried laundry and delighting in my new found love of laundry day!

Have a lovely day,

Robin

Sneaking Flowers

The girls and I made a quick stop at the bank the other day and while we were waiting in the drive-thru I noticed across the street on an undeveloped site countless pretty white flowers.  I told the girls we should stop and pick some when we were done at the bank.

The girls of course thought that was outrageous!

The conversation continued a little like this . . .

the girls:  We can't do that ...
Me:      Why not...
the girls:  We'll get arrested...
Me:  No we won't
the girls:  Are you sure (voices dripping with doubt) ...
Me:  ummm, yes!

After our business at the bank was done I pulled on over, jumped out the car and started picking.  The girls, despite they're objection, joined right in.  Giggling and saying hurry, hurry.

I'm not sure what you call this type of flower or maybe it's a weed - - whatever it is I love it.

It looks very pretty sitting on the desk in the Living Room.
I half expect a policeman to show up at our doorstep at any moment!  LOL.

Have a great day everyone,

Robin

Fun Finds

This past weeks thrifting adventures produced only a few finds.  Each item I did manage to find has been on my wish list for a while now.  You can imagine my excitement.

I have a small collection of soup tureens already but I always thought a smaller version of one would be nice to add to the collection.  This beauty fits the bill.

Always on the lookout for ironstone, I was delighted to find this piece to add to my collection.
I adore it's graceful shape and the tiny cracks all over it's surface.   But then I'm a sucker for anything with graceful, curvy handles or shape.  This find fills both criteria's.

And finally, I found a simple basket with a lid and a gorgeous wood box.  I can see both painted up in pretty colors.  I'm thinking either white or teal for the basket and red for the box!

Have you come across any fun finds of your own lately?
I'd love to hear what your on the lookout for!

What's Blooming Now?

I know there has been more than a few garden realated post of late.  If your not into gardening, I appoigize and ask you to hang in there a little longer with me.  This time of year with my gardens in bloom I tend to get a little carried away!  Within the month, I'll be back to my normal activities inside the house with plenty of projects to share but for now I'm going to enjoy the wonderful summer sunshine and the pretty blooms from my garden.

This morning I walked around my yard taking photos of some of my favorite flowers in bloom.  They turned out so well I've decided to make a quick post about them.

Here's what's blooming now.

Annabelle Hydrangea . . . .

Spiera Shrubs in a delightful pale pink/purple color . . .

Shrub Roses in pink . . .

Campula (I think) in pale purple. . . .

Potentilla shrub in white . . .

This shrub is one of my favorites.  It blooms all season long and always looks amazing.

Garden Phlox in pink . . .

Tickseed Coreposis in yellow . . .

More shrub roses in a darker pink color . . .

Meadow Sage in puple . . .

And finally, this plant that for the life of my I can not remember what it is.  I know that somewhere along the line I knew the name but I just can't recall it right now.  Can anyone help me out?

Mom's Garden

I was at my mom and dad's the other day for a visit and of course I was drooling over her garden.  Mom has an amazing green thumb and her gardens always look pretty and lush!  Inspired by the beauty, I thought a few photos were in order.

One of my favorite beds in Mom's yard is her Hollyhock bed.  It's out on the edge of the property surrounded by cornfields and old outbuilding from the neighboring farmer they share a driveway with.

It's a simple sort of bed, one I'm sure that doesn't need or get much attention.  Regardless, it's one of my favorites.

Two types of flowers fill the bed,  Lamb Ears in the front, Hollyhocks in the back.
It's the perfect combo.

Hollyhocks for some reason are the essence of country life to me.  Their simplicity and beauty always amazes me.
I look forward to visiting every year when they are in bloom.

The outbuilding that makes such a nice backdrop for the Hollyhocks is sadly not mom and dad's but the neighbors instead.  Inside the three sided structure is a vintage car that has been sitting their for as long as I can remember.

It's a Fleetmaster in a pretty shade of green.

Don't you just love all the details on vintage car's?

I hope one day this old beauty will be fixed up but until then I'll enjoy visiting her from time to time.

Talk to you soon,

Robin

Simple and Fresh Kitchen Window Display

With the last days of summer upon us I'm all about keeping things simple and enjoy the little bit of time we have left before school starts again.

Decorating inside the house has been on hold for a couple months now with my focus more on the outside of my home.  For some reason, this morning I couldn't ignore my bare kitchen window for another second.

Needing something quick and easy, I gathered up a handful of new thrift store finds and houseplant from the other side of the kitchen.  Plopped them all down on the counter, moved things around a bit and walked away happy with the results.

I didn't feel like the grouping needed much more.

The simplicity of the arrangement and the individual pieces themselves are all so lovely.  Arranging just a few items this way is one of my favorite things to do in order to highlight items with a pretty shape or graceful curves.  It makes them pop out at you even in a busy room such as the kitchen.

Hope your all having a lovely day,

Robin

Two Sides Of The Porch

On the back of our home we have a small deck and an enclosed glass porch.  Over the years the space as been used for a multitude of different activities.

This summer it seems my husband and I have taken it over for our own personal use.  Rarely do the kids ever set foot out here, it may seem terrible to say this out-loud, but we're sort of loving it.  I'm sure come next summer it will all change but for now hubby and I are rolling with it.

Two zones have emerged on the smallish porch.  Her side, and His side.

His side is stark, functional, almost bare. . . and he loves it that way.

Her side is a comfy, pretty, almost overcrowded . . . and she loves it that way.

His side is used every morning.

Hubby sits out here, drinking his coffee, reading through emails, and planning his days.  More often than not, working on his computer is how he ends the day also.

Her side of the porch doesn't see activity on such a strict schedule.

Mostly it's used to catch a few moments to myself throughout the day and if I'm lucky once the sun goes down.  My favorite thing to do is light the candles, grab my kindle, open all the windows and listen to the night sounds as I read a book or play a game.  It does make a wonderful napping spot too on a cooler days or evenings.

When I first started decorating this space I knew I wanted to use as many vintage finds as I could.  Also, I wanted it to be color filled and cheerful.

The sofa was an early spring score that the local thrift store.  It's floral pattern is pretty, but a little too much for me so I covered it with a hot pink quilt to tone down it down a little.  A table runner placed over the back and two feed sack pillows added a little softness and gave me an opportunity to add some vintage elements.

I used a pretty, blue bench in front of the sofa to hold my candles and a few pretty items.  My favorite candle scent this summer is watermelon lemonade from Bath and Body Works.

They smell amazing!  I need to stock up.

Underneath, a vintage Pepsi crate hold some fresh picked Hydrangea's.

To the side of the sofa, a wicker side table and a extra chair finished off the arrangement.

The chair is painted the prettiest shade of blue which I love.   A tiny pillow adds a little softness.

The wicker table holds  a cute twig basket and my current potted plant obsession - - pink geraniums.  The fan placed on the floor is a nice vintage touch also I think.

I have planters, and planters filled with pink geraniums this year in all different shades of pink.  This spring I rediscovered my love of these simple, pretty plants.   Hubby vetoed any such pretty plants on his side of the porch so instead I've tucked them wherever I thought they looked nice on both my side of the porch and the deck itself.  The geranium below sitting on the wicker table is potted in a simple plastic pot and placed on a vintage serving platter.  A quick and easy way to add another touch a vintage to the space.

On the other side of the porch I placed an over-sized plant holder from Home Goods filled with yet another pink geranium and a chicken statue.

Mrs. Chicken as been around here a long, long time and I still love her.  I think I picked it up at Target waayyy back when.  She looks cute keeping a careful eye on my flowers.

I have truly enjoyed the space I've carved out for myself.  However, I think the best feature of the space is it's view!  Being able to have a great view of my garden and the park beyond give me the sense that I'm in the country surround by wide open spaces.

Hope you've enjoyed the tour,

Robin
