Adding A Shelf

Over a year ago I updated our family room with a new wall color, curtains and a few pillows then called it a day. Not much has changed since that time and I've been fine with that until lately.

My goal this past month has been to cozy up the room, add artwork to the bare walls and make the room function better for the family.

The first wall I tackled was a large wall that also sports our fuse box and a few other quirky eye sores. In an effort to draw the eye away from the unseemly spots I decided to hang a shelf to add more display space. I already had a Ikea shelf I'd purchased a couple years ago that worked perfect. In the future I may replace it with something a little more "farmhouse" looking but for now it's the perfect solution.

I'm very happy with the result.

The vintage items on the streamlined shelf is good mix. One that seems very classic to me.

On the shelf I placed a collection of metal boxes which I love.

I hung my homemade art just slightly above the shelf.

And filled the rest of the shelf with a collection of silver bells, an old camera and two lantern.

To help blend the shelf down towards the bead board half wall I hung two frames filled with vintage black and white photos I'd picked up at flea markets.

I placed my old washtub underneath the shelf to hold cozy blankets for snuggling on the sofa nearby.

The new addtions have added charm and a disctraction from the unsightly.

Exactly what I was hoping for.

Shadow Box, Part 2

This past week I was able to finish a second shadow box makeover. I was going for a white on white effect and decided to try my hand at making a large white felt Dahlia flower.

Shadow Box, Part 1

In an effort to add unique artwork to my home I decided to redo two shadow boxes that my mother in law passed down to me years ago.

Trying to keep things simple and use what I had on hand, I first painted the frame black and the mat white.

Next using trial and error I rolled pages from an old book into tiny cones. With scissors I cut the ends at an angle and then arranged them in a wreath pattern on some scrapbook paper.

I love the result.

I'm very excited to be able to create something new from items I already had.

Paper Wreath

It seems once January hits I hunker down and slip into hibernation mode. I can't believe it's been almost two weeks since my last post. The days have been slipping by at an alarming rate. I have been keeping myself busy organizing the house and completing a few projects off the 'ol to-do list.

One such project I'll share today.

I live in the split entry home with a very small entry (it's more of a landing than entry). It's a very tough place add any sort of decoration since every available inch is needed for maneuvering around and out the door. The entry's saving grace is a small wall halfway up the steps into the living room and kitchen area. It's the perfect place to add a little "me", and an area that has been neglected for a long time.

I thought a paper wreath would fit the space perfectly. After digging out my glue gun this is what I came up with.

Here you can see it hanging in the entry way.

Here's a close up of the middle. I used a little vintage lace to add a some softness.

Baby Tree's

This year when the girls and I went to pick out our Christmas tree they fell in love with the tiny "baby" trees. At ten dollars each we picked out two. Combined with two five foot fake trees I already had, we each had a tree to decorate however we wanted. It was so much fun.

I placed my tree on the little used dinning room table. I've really enjoyed having it up out of the way not taking up floor space. The kids loved it too. They eat breakfast each morning in the glow of tinkling lights.

I dressed up the tree with a white feather boa garland, silver bells, snowflakes and icicles.

Underneath the tree I placed a red and white striped table runner and a few glitter houses Zoe and I made together this year.

It's the perfect place for the houses, they glitter and sparkle so pretty at night.

I've scattered a few smaller trees around the house also. I'm loving this simple one in the living room with white stars.

The girls placed their trees in the family room. This one is Emily's.

This one is Zoe's.

And this one is Jasmine's.

We may have started a new tradition with the baby trees. We all had so much more fun decorating them this year than in the past. Plus baby trees are much easier to drag in and set up. I can see us going it again next year.

The Christmas Hutch

This morning I finally finished my Christmas decorating - - what a relief!

How about you - are you done?

Seems like it took me forever this year. It all worked out in the end, I'm very happy with the results.

For the hutch this year I tried to keep things simple, yet pretty and sparkling.

Candles, silver and greenery.

Along with a few treasured vintage items like this Christmas card.

Of course I had to throw in some stars and a few favorite white dishes.

But I'm most excited about the glitter houses.

They make me smile. Even as I rushed to finish each tiny one.

I may have taken this whole glittering things too far with the little truck. But I just couldn't help myself. I think it's adorable.

I think Santa agrees.

Now I'm off to bake up a batch of Mint Brownies and I may or may not eat half of them myself!

Tiny Christmas Sleigh

With a self imposed spending freeze on all things holiday decor it's a good thing I won a giveaway to have something new to play with!

The lovely and talented Deb from Cappuccino Cottage was kind enough to give away one of these adorable sleighs. I never imagined I'd be the lucky winner! I'm so thankful. Thank you Deb.

I played around with different spots to place my new treasure - under the tree . . . in the bedroom . . . in the kitchen - finally I decided the perfect spot was in the dinning room.

I tucked some greenery underneath and on top simple mercury glass candle holders and tiny sparkling ornaments was all that was needed to finish the display.

Look at the adorable tag Deb sent with it.

**Sigh** I love it.

Red and White Christmas Bedroom

Red and white is my absolute favorite color combination. Has been for quite some time and there's no better time to use it than the holidays.

Every winter I look forward to putting a new twist on the classic pair in my master bedroom.

This year the artwork on either side of the window was replaced with framed fabric samples in red and white to add a burst of red to the white walls.

Tiny wreaths made from coffee filters were hung over the frames.

I love the way the wreaths pop against the red.

On my dresser, a collection of silver gravy boats are filled with red glass ornaments and garland.

The bedside table is kept simple with a small votives and more ornaments.

A red bench was brought in to sit at the end of the bed.

It holds a pretty lantern along with extra blankets and pillows.

More red and white on the bed itself and a white glitter house village on the headboard mantel adds sparkle to the room.

I'm very happy with this years version of the red and white bedroom. It's has very calm and restful feeling to me. I find myself sneaking off to hang out in my room a little more often these days just because I love it so much.

Candy Cane Christmas

If you ask me what my favorite holiday treat is, I'd answer without hesitation . . .

CANDY CANES

I love them.

I eat dozens of them every December.

It's not surprising at all that they've inspired some of my holiday decorating in the kitchen.

The top shelf is very much like last years display. I'm still in love with the bottle brush wreath. I think it looks so nice against the white plate.

The bottom shelf is a mix of old and new items.

Red bottle brush trees I've had for years . . .

A vintage pitcher is also a reused items. The candy canes inside seem to be disappearing at an alarming speed. I'll have to stock up next time I'm at the store.

The candy cane striped frame is a new this year. It was one of the first holiday craft projects I completed this winter. I distressed and stained it heavily to give it a vintage feel and I'm so happy with the results.

A vintage inspired sticker is the only adornment the frame needed.

Oh, and in case I run out of candy canes before I get to the store, a dish filled with peppermint puffs will work in a pinch.

My ~~obsession~~ collection of bottle brush trees and vintage deer figurines had produces a delightful holiday display for the kitchen window.

I'm completely smitten. . .

Can you blame me?

As the afternoon sun streams through the window, the trees sparkle and the deer seem to glow. It's absolutely stunning.

And once cold winters night settles in, the flameless candles flicker a pretty glow to enjoy the sight and give the kitchen a cheerful, cozy feeling.

This display may be sticking around until spring! What do you think?

Revamping Holiday Decorations

This year I've placed a ban on any new purchases of holiday decorations. Focusing on using what I have instead. I decided to go with a Winter Wonderland theme. Lots of white and silver with touches of my favorite color red.

I've had this tiny tree for years.

It seemed too dark for my winterland theme so I dug out some flat white paint and added snow to it's branches with a small paint brush like this . . .

Followed with a dusting of glitter. I just painted some glue on the branches and sprinkled on the glitter.

I placed the tree inside a vintage Christmas dish, added some sparkly silver garland around it's base and now it brings a little winterland to my kitchen counter.

My next project was a simple grapevine wreath that I haven't used in years.

More flat white paint made it look like this.

After adding a few white poinsettia's and a white ribbon . . .

It now looks great hanging over an empty picture frame in the living room.

Glitter Houses

I've been crafting and glittering up a storm the past couple weeks in between decorating my home for the holidays. You may remember last year I was obsessed with glitter houses.

Apparently I'm still not over it.

So far I've made this sweet little church. . .

Followed by this red house.

I also made a green house which I forgot to take a picture of. All the houses had a spot in my hutch waiting for them. But then I realized instead of random colored houses I wanted them to match color wise like my bedroom mantel. The look was much more appealing to me.

So I had to start over. This time with a strict color scheme.

I adore it.

I have one more in the works and then I think I may need concentrate on more important things like holiday baking, haha.

Bedroom Mantel

Good Morning!

I thought today it would be fun to link up to the Holiday Home Linky Party to participate in the Merry Mantels Party.

Although technically I don't have a mantel, the headboard shelf I made a while back works wonderful as one.

This arrangement is a favorite of mine from last holiday season. I loved it so much I've been waiting all year to bring it back. It was a snap to but together since I already had it all worked out.

One new addition is the silver beaded garland and a single snowflake. I think it adds a nice touch and a little more sparkle which I can't get enough of this time of the year.

Pretty white bottle brush trees are placed between the glitter houses.

A white feather boa is used for snow. I love the soft look it gives the arrangement.

Tiny battery operated fairy lights are hidden in the feathers and gives the room a pretty glow at night.

**Sigh**

It's so pretty, no wonder I've been waiting all year to set it up again.

Christmas Countdown Mittens

Good Morning Friends.

Sorry I've been MIA for the past couple of weeks. After Thanksgiving, I dug out box after box of Christmas decorations and have been holed up inside decorating ever since.

I think I'm almost done. Last year it took me the better part of the month of December to finish it all. This year I was determined to get it all done in the first week of December in order to enjoy the season with my girls.

In our home its tradition to hang the countdown mittens in the kitchen window to signal the start of the season. I like to be sneaky and hang them up bright and early before the kids wake up on December first. I find it so fun to watch their sleepy eyes light up and a brilliant smile spread across their faces.

Everyone knows what the mittens mean . . . soon we'll be picking out trees, baking up our favorite treats and wrapping presents.

Funny how simple shapes cut from felt has become such a big part of our Christmas celebration.

The Thanksgiving Picture Ledge

The narrow picture ledge in the Dinning Room has been begging me for a little attention. Since I'm hosting Thanksgiving this year I figured it was something I had better do right away!

After quickly changing out the picture frames with a pretty wreath, some candles and two silver trays the shelf is looking a little more Thanksgiving worthy.

The easily assembled floral balls I made earlier in the week adds a little more color to the mix and blends well with the wreath.

A tiny pumpkin nestled in a silver gravy boat is my favorite addition to the shelf I think.

But then again,

I'm loving the silver trays too.

They catch the afternoon sunlight and glow in such a pretty way.

Besides the hutch and this shelf, the only other thing I've done for Thanksgiving decorating is the small shelf in the kitchen.

The top remained unchanged since Halloween and is still a favorite. The bottom shelf was quick and easy with the addition of a pitcher of flowers and a sign I made last year.

Now that the decorating is done I guess it might be a good idea to turn my thought towards feeding my guests! I suppose a turkey is in order. LOL.

Quick and Easy Floral Balls

My days are a little hectic this week.

I have a handful of small projects that need my attention so today's post is going to be a fast one.

Floral balls have been on my to-do list of a while - What better time to give it a whirl than Thanksgiving!

I used a three inch Styrofoam ball and one bunch of fall colored mums for each of the two balls I made. After simply cutting the stems down to about 1 1/2 inches long I stuck them into the Styrofoam ball

- - no gluing required. I kept the bottom clear of flowers so they would sit nicely into small containers.

Quick and easy doesn't even begin to describe how fast they went together.

I think they look amazing against the sliver don't you?

Good Morning, hope you had a great weekend! We had beautiful weather and spent most of the weekend outside. A big treat for us in this part of the country.

With all the outside playing going on, I did squeeze in a little time to finish my Thanksgiving decorating. I don't do much so it was quick!

This time of the year my focus is on texture and warmth in terms of decorating. Candles, vintage books, chunky distressed frames, a healthy dose of silver and white ironstone and of course grapevine. I have a love/hate relationship with grapevine. It's silly, but most of the year I can't stand to use it. Once autumn sneaks up on me though, I can't get enough of it.

As like most area's in my home, I wanted to keep the hutch accessories simple.

Focusing on texture and a few favorite items.

White ironstone and a grapevine wreath look amazing together I think.

A chunky, distressed frame makes a great backdrop for a small pitcher filled with colorful leaves.

I just had to add a few clocks for a little graphic layering.

Nothing overly fancy.

Yet pleasing to the eye.

And full of texture.

A Silver Tray

I'm on a roll when it comes to finding pretty silver pieces lately. A quick stop at the thrift store produced this beautiful engraved tray!

I adore the curvy shape and it's floral edges.

You can't really see the engraving very well but it reads "Senior Class President 1959"

I'm hoping to use it somewhere in the Dinning Room for Thanksgiving.

Distressed Wood Frame

Scrapbook paper and Mod Podge are the perfect pair.

Add a inexpensive frame to the mix and magic happens.

I found this scrapbook paper at Michael's a while back and fell in love right away. I bought a whole stack of it even though I had no idea what I was going to do with it.

While I was brainstorming, I realized a had an unfinished frame from the craft store just begging for a little attention.

I'm sure you've all seen paper covered frames before so I won't bore you with the step by step. Basically I just stained the outer edges of the frame, followed by a quick coat of cream paint to mimic the scrapbook paper. A light sanding and the addition of the pretty paper finished the project.

Quick. Easy. And Oh, So Beautiful.

Very farmhouse don't you think.

I think this frame will work wonderful in my hutch to add a little texture. I'm working on my Thanksgiving decor now and hope to show it off early next week.

A Silver Sugar Pot

Nothing says fall quite like tarnished silver. It adds such warmth and texture to a room.

I was happy to find this sugar pot at the thrift store the other day.

I like it's trophy-like shape - - don't you?

I've placed it in the hutch and I'm loving how it looks along side the Thanksgiving decor I've already arranged. I think it adds just the right amount of tarnished sparkle.

Hopefully by tomorrow I'll have the hutch completed and be able to show you what I've done.

Mini Cutting Board Makeover

Good Morning Everyone!

Hope you had a lovely weekend. I took the day yesterday to catch up on some house cleaning and make sure the yard is ready for the first snow of the season. Apparently is coming in later today - - excitement is high around here. The first snow is always much anticipated.

I have a quick project to share today that was very fun for me. Last week I came across an old cutting board at the thrift store. It was starting to split at the bottom and looked well used but the shape was classic and I liked it's small size.

I thought it was the perfect way to add another cow silhouette to my decor.

After allowing the paint to dry, I heavily distressed the design. I really like the way all the knife marks show through.

It's also the perfect size for the tiny wall next to the kitchen window above the sink.

Don't you just love quick and easy - - not to mention CUTE!

Is It Glitter Time?

Good Morning!

Now that it's November I feel it's OK to start thinking about decorating for Christmas.

Has your mind drifted that way too?

It's always a toss up between styles for me.

I like the natural elements like fresh greenery, pine cones and the smell of cinnamon.

But then I love the sparkle of glitter and bright cheerful colors.

I'm sure this year I'll merge the two styles just like I do every year.

Anyways, that's not really what I wanted to talk about today, so lets jump right in. . .

See this adorable little guy?

I have a weakness for vintage deer.

My collection may be small but they are one of my favorite items to use at Christmas time. I'm always on the lookout - - without much luck most of the time. I'm not ashamed to admit there was squealing when I first spotted him. Poor Ms. Emily was so embarrassed.

I was cool with that - - I had a new vintage deer for my collection!!!!!

Now that I have a new Christmas pretty to play with my mind has turned towards how to use it.

My favorite way is to nestle them in among my glitter houses . . .

and bottle brush trees.

Most of the glitter houses I've made myself, although I do have a few purchased ones.

I have quite the collection and I'm hoping to add to it this year. I've saved an impressive amount of cereal boxes to make them with, even drafted a couple houses of my own and can't wait to get started.

The Homework Desk

In the dinning room is a little shelf which I've been wanting to replace with a sideboard or dresser of some kind. The shelf itself is perfectly functional, but it seems too small for the space. I've looked and looked for something to replace it, without much luck.

After rearranging the girls bedroom, which involved taking the bunk bed apart to use as two separate single beds there was no available floor space for Ms. Emily's beautiful desk. We moved the desk to the middle of the living room where it sat for days on end while I contemplated what to do.

I can tell you it looked silly sitting in the middle of the room and quickly became a frustration not to mention a big roadblock. In pure desperation one morning, I moved it over in front of that little shelf in the dinning room just to get it out of the way.

To say I had an "Ah-Huh" moment would be putting it mildly. Nearly tripping over myself, and stubbing my toes not once but twice in my hast to complete the switch I was giddy with relief.

I was a little worried the desk would take up too much of our walking space but it seems to be working out just fine.

I've always love this desk . . .

The top is scratch up and it's looking a little rough . . .

But look at the detail. . . the curved drawers . . .

And those legs!

**sigh** so pretty.

Ms. Emily is loving it too!

She now has her very own homework space with easy access to mom!

Now begins my campaign for paint.

Don't you think she would look like a million bucks painted white with oil bronzed drawer pulls and a little distressing in just the right places?

I just have to convince Ms. Emily.

A Little Change

The result is a fresh new look that I'm very happy with.

Happy Halloween

I've finally finished my Halloween decorating. It seems every years I'm scrambling to get it done before the big day. I'm pretty certain that must mean I'm the best procrastinator ever! LOL!

Other than the spooky hutch, I try to keep all of my decorations more seasonal then Halloween so I'm able to use them right up until Thanksgiving.

Hmmm, maybe that makes me a lazy procrastinator. . . regardless I like what I've come up with this year.

A white enamelware pitcher filled with flowers and two tiny pumpkins work for me.

The kitchen step stool received a light up white pumpkin and a mouse.

The dinning room received few clusters of pumpkins like this.

In the living room I've added a touch from my past in the form of vintage Halloween decorations passed on to me from my mom. I remember them hanging up around the house when I was growing up and look forward to using them every year in my home.

And finally, the entryway received a pretty white pumpkin and some spiders.

Good Morning!

Just a quick post today to show you what I've done by the front door for Halloween.

Pumpkins, cornstalks, mums and mice!

The mice are for my girls.

They enjoy things spooky this time of the year.

Me, I like things the way I always do. Chippy, rusty ... with a pop of color.

I think the two go together nicely don't you?

Tiny Gourds

OK I confess, I'm not sure if these are considered a squash or a gourd.

No matter - - I like decorating with them anyways.

When mom dropped off a bucket full for me I was quite pleased. After picking out the teeny, tiny ones I placed them on a pretty dish on top of the kitchen scale.

After a trip to the grocery store to buy ~~pumpkins~~ milk they had some friends to hang out with.

I think they bring a beautiful touch of fall to the kitchen.

A Silver Bell

I love thrift store shopping don't you?
It seems I'm always on the lookout for the same things. I'm getting very good at zeroing in on anything silver or white.

A few weeks back I happened to spy a silver bell and it instantly reminded me of my Grandmother. She collected bells with a passion. Hundreds and hundreds of bells. As a child I remember the hutch in her kitchen filled with them in all shapes and sizes. Every time we visited, my sister and I would study each shelf trying to pick out any new additions.

When I spotted this silver beauty with all her pretty curves I knew I couldn't pass her up.

It may not be one of Grandma's bells, but it reminds me of her and makes me smile.

Wall Lantern

Good Morning!

Hope your enjoying this beautiful day. I've been busy moving things around the house in an effort to cozy up the house for fall. As soon as the temperatures start to drop here in Minnesota I like to dig out my candles and lanterns. They seem to add instant warmth to a room.

Years ago I purchased a red hanging lantern at Target, it's still a favorite. It's been placed in many different locations around my home and I thought this year it would be a nice addition to the bench corner in the dinning room.

Here's what it looks like before I placed the lantern on the wall. . .

I think it adds another great pop of red for fall. I was worried the lantern and the stars on the wall would be too much for the tiny wall they are hanging on. I debated removing the stars altogether but in the end I kept them up. After much debate with my girls that is. We all are of mixed opinion's, it was decided to ask for some help from my wonderful blog friends.

So my smart blogging friends, what do you think?

Fall Hydrangea's

The Annabell Hydrangea's in the backyard are showing their final colors of the season in pretty shades of green and pink. I thought they would make a perfect fall accent in the living room.

An Autumn Bedroom

With autumn in full swing I've turned my attention away from the gardens outside and more towards making the house cozy and warm. I seem to start in the bedroom for some reason every year, I'm not sure why. This year was no exception.

Out with the green of summer and in with the cozy red of fall.

To the bed I added a warm, fuzzy dark red throw to the end and two large throw pillows . . . one with a red stripe and one with a red floral.

One the shelf above the bed I added two lanterns, a few clocks, a touch of silver and a vintage Pepsi crate.

I've never used the crate to display small items before. I find I like the look.

Inside the lanterns and footed silver dishes I've place flameless candles with timers to give the room a pretty glow once the sun goes down.

To soften the look and add a touch of color, I've tucked faux leaves wherever I thought it looked nice.

On hubby's nightstand I place a grapevine wreath on top of an urn and added some more leaf branches. The wreath does a great job of holding up the branches.

On the nightstand next to my side of the bed I placed a vintage book and leaf sprig on top.

I'm loving the results in the bedroom and it's energized me to start on the rest of the house.

A Weekend In The Woods

This past weekend the girls and I had the opputunity to attend my uncles annual ATV Rally at his cabin in the woods.

All weekend long the girls were in pure bliss with cousins and friends to play with, rides to go on and endless fun to be had until they drop from exhaustion at the end of the day. Mommy likes it just as much. I had time to catch up with cousins of my own. We spend hours huddled up around the campfire talking.

This year mom decided to set up a "Spooky Trail" in the middle of the woods to be discovered by unsuspecting ATV'ers. The kids loved it. The adults got in on the action too! During one of the night rides, two of the uncles snuck off to hide in the woods along the Spooky Trail. When the caravan of twenty plus ATV's wondered through they'd jump out and scare us half out of our wits. It was a good time.

Since it was such beautiful fall weather we took many walks down the Spooky Trail.

Mom even dressed up a few spooky friends which the kids gave names to.

An Autumn Kitchen Windowsill

For a quick and easy autumn display in the kitchen windowsill I thought a few cutting from my limelight hydrangea would work perfectly.

The flowers have changed into gorgeous cream and pink shades with a tiny touch of brown.

I simple dropped the cutting into clear glass bottles and lined them up in the windowsill.

Don't you just love quick and pretty displays?

Decorating Identity Crisis?

The past few months I feel as if I have been in a decorating identity crisis.
Do you feel that way sometimes?

As an avid reader of blogs, magazines and books on the subject of home decorating I find the inspiration at times . . . overwhelming. Like many of you, I read many, many blog posts on a daily basis. Drooling over this picture . . . or saying to myself "oh! I like that . . . and more often than not filing away this and that for future reference or interpretation.

It's the beauty of blogging.

Inspiration a few clicks away.

It all good.
Great in fact.

However, it has lead me to the realization that I need to take a step back and reevaluated what it is that I truly like. It's easy to be swayed by such a constant flow of idea's.

We have all seen homes perfectly presented and true to the owners style. Colors in perfect harmony, accessories placed with great care seemingly destined to have been made for that particular location in the home. We know deep down that it's been a process that has happened over time. I've marveled at the talent and focus it takes to produce such a space.

With so many different directions, how do you know which one to take?
I know for a fact that my style is country. Country is simple, laid back - - an easy, breezy sort of style. But here's where it gets dicey. Am I country minimalist, country posh, country cottage, country modern, country rustic . . . etc. Technically, I know a label is just a starting point but I want to be sure of my focus.

To help myself find direction, I started making a list of all the features currently in my home that I like. Next I made a list of things I would like to add given the chance.

With lists on hand, I started reevaluating photos from books I own, pins on Pintrest and my inspiration book. As I came across a photo which I found appealing I'd asked myself whether it would fit the criteria on either of the two lists.

Surprisingly it seems I'm not having as much of a decorating identity crisis as I'd originally feared!

I've picked a few photos to share with you that best illustrates what I've discovered about my decorating style. (Sorry I'm not able to give you sources for each photo. I'm assuming most have been torn out of old Country Living magazine, but I'm just guessing)

This first example has been a long time favorite.

I'm drawn to the painted furniture pieces for color, the not so typical addition of a bench at the dinning table, and the farmhouse/schoolhouse lighting. The wall treatment is another draw. As is the use of only a few, simple accessories.

This photo shows my love of barely-there wall color, the addition of natural elements and my love of white woodwork and dark hued hardware.

Here is another example of a natural elements, painted furniture, simple accessories and pops of color.

And finally, this photo shows my love of vintage items used to added depth to a home.

I still don't have a label for my style other an good old country, but a least I feel as if I'm moving the the right direction!

Easy Slipcovered Ottoman

With football season in full swing, I've turned my attentions to making the TV room a little more cozy for watching the games. Every Sunday afternoon our home as become a place for our family and friends to gather and cheer the Packers towards another victory! With at least five adults and eight kids running around on a slow day, a place for everyone to get cozy, sit back and relax has me moving furniture around the house every ~~Packer~~ football season.

This year I decided to move a wing back chair from the living room down into the TV room. It's perfectly comfy but what's watching football if you can't put your feet up? An ottoman was just what was needed. I braved the overflowing storage area under the steps and sewed a quick slipcover to cover it's ugly forest green fabric.

I also made a quick pillow slipcover for the chair from a sugar sack I had picked up more than a year ago. It's just been waiting for the perfect project.

I love the way the ottoman slipcover turned out. It took less than an hour to put together so I thought I'd share in case your looking for a quick and easy project.

I first started by draping fabric over the ottoman, using quilting pins to hold the fabric in place while I worked.

Since I was going for easy and quick I didn't want to deal with any complicated corners. Instead I simply made two pleats - one on either side of a corner.

Folded the left pleat toward the center, followed by the right pleat.

After pinning the bottom of the pleat, I pinned each individual pleat to hold it steady during sewing. Next I marked a sewing line with a pencil. I repeated the same steps on all four corners of the ottoman. Once everything was pinned and marked I removed the slipcover and sewed a basting stitch along the sewing lines on each corner.

I next checked for fit. It looked like this.

After I was satisfied it fit well I pinned each pleat about one and a half inches above the basting line. Then sewed a top stitch from the basting line up to the V of the pleat. This gave the base of the slipcover more snugness to hold it onto the ottoman.

Next I added a ruffle to the bottom of the slipcover and called it a day.

I'll be sitting here come next Sunday - yelling and screaming . . . moaning and groaning . . .making sarcastic comments and muttering "get'm, get'm, get'm" . . . all together being very un-ladylike and enjoying every second!!!!!!

Piano Bench Makeover

Earlier this summer I picked up a piano bench at the thrift store. The color was wrong and it was in rough shape. The legs were badly scratched and the bench seat had scrapes and gouges but it was otherwise sturdy. Despite it's condition I thought it would work perfectly at the dinning room table. I already have one bench, another one would complete the look. Once home it was clear it was too tall to be used at the table.

Determined to find a spot for it, I went ahead and gave it a makeover. Figuring I'd work with it's rough condition, I first gave it a coat of black paint. Once that was dry I gave it two coats of Cottage White. The last coat I let dry for a few minutes and then using a paint scraper I carefully removed the white paint to reveal the black undercoat, concentrating on the edges of the seat and the legs. I tried to mimic the original distressing as best as I could. After the paint had dried completely I gave the area's I'd scraped off a quick sanding to smooth things out. A coat of stain over the top deepened the white paint to a muted, vintage white and a coat of wax finished the project.

I love the result.

Now the color works great in my house. I like the heavy distressing along the edges and legs. Plus the contrast between the white and black makes me very happy.

Now all I needed was to find a place for my new bench. I moved it all over the house trying different places but in the end the perfect spot was in the dinning room.

Tucked into the corner, the bench makes a perfect spot to add a little softness and a pop of color with a few pillows.

A lantern was placed on top to add some pretty and a galvanized bucket underneath for just a touch more metal - I can't get enough of it this time of the year. The bucket works great as a place to stash small items like toys and books until I have the time to deal with them properly.

I'm so happy it fits so perfectly into this corner of the dinning room. In a pinch, we can still use it for extra seating at the table - just like I had originally planed!

Quick and easy pillows

This past week I dusted off the ol' sewing machine to tack a few long procrastinated chores. Mostly mending and such. Sewing can be a dangerous thing for me. Months can go by without sewing a single thing, but once I start it's hard to stop. I find myself sewing anything and everything I can get my hands on. I drop everything else and become completely immersed in it.

This time around is no exception. Just to procrastinate a little longer I decided to make something fun before tackling the boring mending. After scrounging through my leftover fabric, I decided to make a couple pillow covers in order to add a little more red to my fall decorating. I picked out one striped fabric and one floral.

The first slipcover was made with a cheerful red and white stripe. I boxed the corners of the pillow much like I did on my sofa slipcover. It worked out fine but personally think it looks silly with the striped fabric. Oh well, you live and learn I guess. LOL.

For the next slipcover I used a red and white floral - a personal favorite of mine. I love this fabric. It's so cheerful and I love the off white background color with the slightly faded looking red print. I wish I could remember where I bought this fabric since I would love to get my hands on more of it.

All in all, both slipcovers took me less than an hour to finish. Not nearly enough time to procrastinate properly if you ask me!

Pretty Pumpkins

Good Morning!

Hope you all had a lovely weekend. We're enjoying unseasonably warm temperatures here in Minnesota with highs near the 80's. I'm finding it a little difficult to get into the spirit of fall with such warm weather. It seems weird to me to see the leaves starting to change colors yet enjoy summer like weather.

To help myself out I thought a few pumpkins might get me in the October spirit.

I picked up two pie pumpkins at the grocery store and placed them on the dinning room table next to some faux hydrangea's.

I just love pumpkins, don't you? They always make me smile.

Yep, these little guys have done the trick. I can feel my October mojo coming to life.

Book Review: Summer House

Good Morning! Today I have another book review to share.

Terry John Woods "Summer House".

A lovely book filled with beachy inspiration.

Sorry the pictures are not the best. My mother had picked this book up at her local libray and brought it along on a camping trip we took together back in July. The photos, taken in a hurry as we were packing up to head home, I think turned out well enough to give you a resonable sense of how good this book is.

Terry Woods has another gem on his hands with this book.

(The first book, "New Farmhouse Stlye" is a personal favorite of mine and I shared a review on it here.)

If your looking for a casual, beachy (sometimes camp-y) look with strong farmhouse or cottage roots you won't go wrong checking this book out. True to his stlye, Terry has kept the book simple. Consantrating on beautiful photos and keeping the chatting to a minimum. (I sincerly wish more books were this way)

To give you an example of what you'll find inside this book take a look at some of my favorites.

Bright rooms filled with miniumal clutter. I really like the collection of vintage clocks and the landscape painting. Ok, and the dresser - - did you notice the drawer pulls?

This photo had me gasping for breath and running to show mom!

Simple - stunning - very achievable don't you think. I've been collecting small rocks for years and you can bet once I'm fairely certain my kids won't toss the rocks around the house (breaking who knows what) I'll have a similar arrangement in my dinning room.

Gorgeous!

Speaking of gorgeous, look at this.

The dog painting is very unusual and caught my eye right away. But the arrangement on top of the dresser I found had even more appeal to me. I think the simple stack of plates topped with a soup tureen is genuis. The collections of silver candlestick finished off the look nicely. All togther the painting, ironstone and candlesticks produce a classic, uncomplicated look.

Since were talking Summer House what better item to add than boats. How fun and easy it would be to make a few reproductions of these peite boats. The kids would love it- mommy too! Not to mention the hours of fun racing them down creeks or rivers. This idea is going in the file for next summer.

I thought this next example would be the perfect way to add a little nautical whimsy to my home.

The book isn't all about the homes interior or just the summer for that matter.

Outdoors was also addressed. I loved this example using a birdbath for something other an bathing birds.

Holiday decor was also shown, I enjoyed the Christmas ones the most.

Like this urn filled with winterberry.

Or this bottle, wrapped in vintage tinsel and holding a glass ornament.

And finally, a matel incorporating two of my favorite things. Ironstone and vintage family photos.

*Sigh* This book is such a great interpretation of how I would love my home to look. I'll be adding this book to my collection of favorites very soon.

A Vintage Stepstool Chair

Tucked into the corner of the kitchen is a recently found favorite item.

A vintage step stool chair in the perfect shade a white.

For over a year, I'd been looking for one and was delighted to find this one a couple months ago. A better match would be hard to come by. It's slightly rusty and some of the disressing on the egdges of the seat show it's red undercoat - - see what a mean, perfect for my red and white kitchen.

The kids liked it as much as I did - - for weeks I'd find it all over the kitchen. I'm just now able to use it for what I bought it for. Display!

Love those legs!

I simply placed a few items to reinforce the kitchens theme colors and called it a day.

Man! I love easy projects.

An Organized Kitchen Office

Hello!

With the kids back in school full time I wanted to take the time to streamline the office area in my kitchen. You all know how quickly this area can get cluttered and out of control.

The finished result makes the kitchen look much more spacious.

In order to get the whole effect, take a look at where I started.

WHOA!

The overflowing bulletin board was useful yet a constant source of frustration to me. It seemed to overpower the small wall and eat up visual space in the kitchen.

The counter top is a clutter magnet for anything and everything I'm too lazy to deal with right away. Kids toys, parts of projects, returns, pet rocks - - you name it.

Once it's all cleaned up it looks good.

The tiny wall looks so much better now don't you think?

I kept one of the magnetic strips to hold stamps, grocery list, shopping list and the like.

I added a wire mesh file pocket, thirteen dollars from Office Depot. Simple folders were each labeled and hold things like gym schedules, reciepts, school calendars, permission slips, etc. On the front I've used a binder clip to hold anything that needs to be taken care of a.s.a.p or outgoing mail.

I also kept the purse hook. I love my purse hook. Its so handy and helpful. I think we should all have purse hooks.

A few small changes had a big impact on the kitchen. And I'm loving it.

The Summer Bedroom

Good Morning!

Since the weather is changing so quickly here in Minnesota my thoughts have turned towards making the house more cozy. Normally the first place I start is my bedroom. Out goes the bright and airy spring and summer decor to be replaced with cozy reds.

Mid-way through changing things up the realization that I had never shared this years look had me replacing everything and holding a quick photo shoot.

Lime green, lots of white and a touch of black were all that was needed to make the room bright and cheerful for the summer.

The headboard shelf arrangement was keep very minimalistic.

The grouping in the middle gave the arrangement some height and a touch of green. The artwork is a personal favorite, the hand painted number five is a completed project from the early days of blogging which I still love, and the tiny bell I borrowed from my daughters bell collection.

To finish off the arrangement I place two groupings of vintage clocks and two urns filled with faux ferns.

Vintage clocks seem to be a staple in almost every arrangement I've done lately - - can't get enough!

The ferns introduced a nice texture, plus I like the contrast against the white.

Book Review: At Home With Country

I recently had the chance to read Christina Strutt's newest book. Have you read it yet?

I swear the lady can do no wrong. The book is gorgeous. Simply oozing with inspiration.

I love her simple, uncluttered yet colorful take on decorating.

A few of my personal favorites from the book include this table.

I'm over the moon about the color. It's simple lines and distressed state had me falling for it even faster.

And since were talking colorful painted furniture what do you think about this bench?

I love it.

It's not always about color.

I'm drawn to shape and simplicity as well. Like in this photo.

(I'd take that bench any day - - but did you notice the mailbox? I'm swooning!!!)

Here's an example of using white and a single accent color in varying shades. I have to say this is my favorite thing to do. It always looks amazing and is a very "achievable" look for a person like me who is not overly talented in the decorating department.

Need another example?

Simple black and white. You can't get a more classic combination. Here it looks both classic and modern, cozy and country all at the same time.

All in all, the book is great, one I'm sure to reach for time and time again.

Kitchen Shelves

I haven't showed off the shelves in my kitchen for a while ( the last time was way back in December , here). I've had a bit of a problem with this spot in the kitchen. I'm never one hundred percent satisfied with the items I choose to display so I'm constantly rearranging, adding and taking away items.

A month ago in pure frustration I decided to try again - and it worked. I haven't changed a thing since that first day and love it as much now as I did then.

I had been collection clear glass bottles so I knew I wanted to use them plus I was craving more red in the kitchen. I'd hoped that keeping it simple - clear glass with red accents - I might have better luck than in the past.

Glory, Hallelujah it worked!!

On the top shelf I added a red rimmed enamel dish propped up in the middle with two small milk jars in front. Next I added a tall glass bottle found at a garage sale. Followed by a canning jar with a glass lid and metal handle.

Don't you just love the texture a little rust can give?

On the bottom shelf I started with a favorite floral picture frame and a cast iron bird.

Next I added another canning jar and a small textured glass creamer.

On the other side of the frame I added a small milk bottle and another, larger milk bottle with a metal handle. (I picked this out from Amy's Etsy shop and I simple LOVE IT)

What's not to love! Here's a better look.

On the counter below the shelves I've add a collection of red books. A glass sugar bowl and a galvanized planter with some faux boxwood.

And there you have it.

Very simple, yet I hope stylish. Regardless I love the look - you can bet I'll be keeping it just the way it is for a while longer.

Lesson Learned:

I'm a simple girl - - best to not try to get too fancy LOL!

Here in Minnesota we're in the crazy, unpredictable stage of late summer. When the days are still hot yet the nights are cool and you just know autumn is closing in FAST.

I figured I'd better get myself out the garden to take a few pictures or I'd by kicking myself come mid-January when I'm planning the next growing season. Which gives me the perfect opportunity to show how a few hours in the garden every spring with a handful of seeds has given me armfuls of cut flowers all summer long.

Full and lush with lots of flowers for picking.

I planted a few things to eat - corn, tomatoes, cucumber, dill.

Mostly, I planted zinnia's. Lots of zinnia's that love to bloom.

I have a few perennials like phlox and saliva also. Any gaps were filled in with annuals like marigolds and small zinnia's.

I'm completely shocked the gardens looking as good as it is. It's been sorely neglected this year with our busy summer schedule. But it seems to have survived my neglect.

Playing with Textures

Whew!

Can you feel the stress floating away? The kids are officially back in school and for the first time in 11 years I have two FULL DAYS a week in which I have the house completely to myself!!!!!! Oh the plans I have for my free time!

Once the kids started back to school, I jumped right into Operation Clean-Up. You know, undoing all the stuff a busy summer at home with kids, countless camping trips and general laziness on my part - - it all adds up to a dirty, cluttered, unorangaized mess. Decluttering, purging closets, sorting through piles I've stashed and deep cleaning the entire house has taken the better part of a week. I still have the laundry room and master closet to finish. But that can wait. I'm itching to get back to blogging.

It seems like forever since I've had the opportunity catch up with all of you and I'm looking forward to it. I hope you can all forget my sporadic blogging. I promise, I'm back for real this time and am looking forward to showing off a few projects I've done over the summer and checking in on all of you.

Today I'd like to share a few photos I've been playing with on Picnik. I use it to tweak all of my photos since I use a very old point and click type camera. Your all probably familiar with this site, but if not, it's great for people like me who are Photo Shop challenged. Normally I'll crop, brighten, and boost the color a little. But then I discovered textures. It is only available with the Premium package which is a bumber, but if your already a member go check it out.

I wish each texture had a name so I could tell you exactly which one I used - sorry about that. But basically I opened a photo, clicked on the Texture tab, and then selected a texture. If I like the selection I then played with it a little by adjusting either the mode in the drop down box, or the intensity using the slider.

The first photo below is a favorite from this past spring.

After adding a texture and fading it out I like the photo even more. The texture gave the photo an almost hand painted effect.

The next photo I played with is also a favorite - ok they are all favorites. Here's the before - perfectly acceptable and pretty.

But after adding a cracked and flaking texture it's even better. Now that I'm looking at it, maybe I should have changed it to black and white first - but then I love those green Zinnia's, not sure if I'm willing to give it up!

And finally, the last photo originally looked like this.

First I added an texture with curled edges and then on top of that I applied an texture with script.

How easy is that! I love the pop textures can add to photos. I'm sure in the future I'll be using it all the time.

Crazy Over Zinnia's

Good Morning!

Bright and early this morning as I strolled through the garden I was delighted to find my favorite two plants in full bloom. Such great timing since I've been meaning to share with you all my favorite flower arrangement this summer.

I've pretty much used the same two plants and scattered them all around the house. Over . . and over . . . .and over again. I love it so much the rest of the garden is getting downright grumpy with me! LOL

Plus this is a great way to show off a few items I've picked up the last couple of months while I've been taking a blogging break.

It's divine if you love lime green and yellow.

I'll show you more of the flowers in a minute, but first, look at this glass creamer I recently picked up. Works great as a casual candle holder. I love its simple, sophisticated design.

I've placed them in a vintage silver water pitcher - - my favorite find so far this summer. It's perfectly tarnished and I love it's curves.

A vintage platter with scalloped sides and a vintage alarm clock help add more interest.

Yup! I'm completely in love this arrangement.

I just love the different shades of green and yellow. Plus it lasts for a very long time which makes it even better!

A Big Thank You

Hello everyone!

Like many of you, I've been experiencing busy summer days lately. We're trying to pack everything we can into the last few weeks of summer vacation. Sadly, blogging has been put on the back burner. Please forgive my absence, I'm looking forward to being able to blog regularly soon. I have so many projects that I can't wait to share with you.

Today I'd like to share a couple items I received in the mail from a wonderful lady and her fabulously vintage Etsy shop.

A while back Amy from All Things Home and Becky from Buckets of Burlap teamed up for a wonderful giveaway - - Which I was tickled to win. Thanks ladies!

After ooooh'ing and ahhhh'ing over Amy's Esty shop I finally picked out two items that I fell instantly in love with.

Look how pretty this enamelware stock pot looks in my kitchen window.

Right now I've filled it with pretty pink geraniums . . .

My enamel-loving-heart is enjoying it immensely!

And then I saw this large milk bottle with a wire handle.

Oh how beautiful it is.

I love the wavy design . . .

And of course the fabulous handle.

Sweet Amy sent the items I picked out packaged so adorably and even included a surprise for me.

Cozy on the Sun Porch

The past few days have been beautiful here in Minnesota. Sunny, warm yet not too humid and slightly breezy.

The girls and I have been spending most of our relaxation time on the sun porch. Yesterday it occurred to me that I haven't shared this area of our home with you in a very long time.

Each spring I like to rearrange the furniture and try out different color schemes. It currently looks like this.

This years theme was inspired by a vintage tablecloth picked up at a garage sale.

The sun porch overlooks our backyard and the park beyond it giving us the illusion of a wide open space which I love.

The girls and I love to eat breakfast and lunch at the table and watch the birds and butterflies in the garden.

The view is so pretty whatever time of day it is.

For a centerpiece I decided to go with something simple so the kids can easily move it out of the way if they'd like.

A wire cake plate, a candle and some rocks seemed simple and pretty to me.

I also added a small dish and a pedestal creamer which the girls use to place any flowers they pick.

Next to the entrance door I place an over sized lantern and a chair for extra seating.

Right now the girls have their picnic basket filled with small toys resting on the chair.

The best spot on the porch is this cozy corner.

The perfect spot to relax, read or take a quick snooze.

Big, fluffy pillows help us snuggle right in.

Next to the lounger was the perfect place to add a few of my favorite things.

Another over sized lantern.

A small red bench.

And a pitcher filled with flowers.

Aren't they gorgeous.

So cheerful and pretty - love them.

And finally, next to the door leading out onto the deck I've placed a patio chair and a galvanized bucket filled with more pillow - just in case!

Feathered Nest Friday

Garden Chores Can Surprise You

I spent the morning yesterday completing some long overdue chores in the garden like weeding and deadheading.

As I was finishing up, I glanced over at my weed bucket trying to gauge if I could cram in a few more weeds.

What I saw had me whipping my head back around for another look.

As I was mindlessly deadhead, a bucket full of pretty was forming . . .

How gorgeous is that!

Now some of you maybe be shaking your head. Thinking to yourself that I've finally fallen off my rocker. Maybe your right, but where a few may see crispy, slightly browning flowers this petal loving nut sees pure beauty.

So instead of throwing them out, I placed the bucket next to the front yard fence so I can enjoy them a while longer.

Who knows, maybe another like-minded petal loving nut may walk by and enjoy the view!

Oh and look!

Phlox are about to bloom - - excitement's high folks!

The Front Door

When it comes to the outside of my home, all my attention is focused on the gardens. As I happily attend to the weeding, the watering, the dreaming I very rarely take the time to simple look around and wonder what visitors would think. With this in mind, I grabbed my camera and started taking photos of the house without the focus being on the flowers. What an eye opener! It's amazing what you notice in a picture you wouldn't otherwise notice.

After pouring over the photos, I've come to the realization that my front door area is boring - -

Really Boring!

Desperate to add some interest A.S.A.P. I headed out to the garage in hope of finding something - anything to help my poor negletced front door.

An old farmhouse chair, an enamelware bowl and a pack of inpatient's called out to me saying "we can help, we can help"

Weak and slightly giddy with relief, I arranged my finds next to the front door and am loving the results.

The chair is a recent flea market find. Eventually a new coat of paint would be nice, but for now a quick bath was all that it needed.

Yep, that helped a lot.

Down-right cute I think!

Sure, it could use a little more attention, but it's hot out there right now! So hot and humid a person starts melting at just the thought of going outside!

Maybe when it cools down a bit I could work on some of theses issues. . .

A door mat would be a nice addition too don't you think?

You can bet I'll be doing a lot of thinking about this area in the next week.

Any thoughts or suggestions - - because you know it's too hot to think right now!

Flowers for the Kitchen

Hi! Remember Me?

Sorry my posts are so few and far between lately. Summer is always such a busy time and I just haven't had the energy to keep up with blogging. Not sure how the days and weeks are flying by since my to-do list mysteriously isn't getting any smaller. Instead, the girls and I are spending time together enjoying the summer. Swimming and laundry seem to be all that I'm accomplishing. But that's OK, projects can wait - - for now!

Any-hoo, moving on . . . today I thought I'd show you a quick project I finished for my kitchen windowsill.

I gathered up a few miniature bottles from my growing collection. Strolled through the garden to clip a handful of my favorite flowers ( pulled a few weeds too, just to convinced myself I haven't neglected the garden too much :)

Next, I plopped the flowers into the bottles, lined them up in a straight row and then added a stone found on our latest ATV trip just for fun.

Tada!

Ten minutes tops (ok maybe fifteen with "all" the weeding) and the kitchen windowsill has a new look. It's pretty too! I'm loving it!

I fell in love with dill last year after picking up a bunch at the farmers market. This year I'm growing my own. These are the first to bloom. The combo of yellow and green is SOOO GORGEOUS

- I can't get enough! I enjoy giving them a gentle sweep of the hand every time I'm at the sink. I find the scent so refreshing.

Lakspur in varing shades of purple - again so pretty. The vintage inkwell bottle is a recent find from our first camping trip this season. Oh, and look - - there is the stone I was talking about. I have a fasination with egg shaped stones so I'm always on the lookout for them when were out and about.

*Sigh*

"Envy" Zinna's - - someone was spot-on when naming this flower!

Isn't the color AMAZING!

I could look at this flower all day!

So there you have it - Quick. Easy. Pretty!

I love the fact that it fits right into the simple. breezy. casual. style I'm working on spreading throughout the house.

Just for fun, since I had my camera out already, I grouped the dill, zinna and daisy's close together to see how it woud look.

I'm thinking you might be seeing an arrangment of dill and zinna's in the very near future! I'm digging the colors together.

In The Garden

With the hot, humid weather we have been experiencing the last week or so, it finally feels as if summer has arrived in Minnesota! My garden loves it!

The veggie garden has decided it's time to grow. It seems everything is doubling in size overnight.

Tomatoes are starting to flower.

Ms. J's salsa garden is looking good.

Maiden Pinks are in full bloom.

Ms. E's corn is looking great.

My "Envy" Zinnia are about to bloom.

Profusion Cherry Zinnia's and Gladiolus are taking off fast now.

Even the main backyard garden is starting to show some color.

The roses are blooming.

The Meadow Sage is also starting to bloom.

The pretty, cheerful daisy are just starting to open up.

Can't wait until they are in full bloom.

One white phlox is blooming.

So are the Hydrangea's - Oh this is a happy day!

But the prettiest spot in the garden right not is just outside the veggie garden.

The speedwell is in full bloom. They don't last long but boy are they pretty like this.

Love them.

Trimming Trees

The girls and I have been working on a long overdue project - - Tree Trimming.

While I've been climbing up ladders and using a handsaw until I thought my arm was about to fall off the girls have had fun making a fort out of all the trimmings.

Here's Ms. J sticking her head out the doorway!

They even let me inside one time. The girls spruced up the inside with blankets, pillows, games, coloring books and snacks. I hardly saw them all day!

After the fun was over, we went to work cutting the limbs into easy to handle lengths.

Apparently wood cutting makes me a little crazy!

We plan to use what we cut up in our fire pit come fall. I love campfires in the fall.

TA-DAAAA!

In the end we have two buckets filled and waiting for fall.

Next week will tackle the pine trees!

Sidetable Spruce-Up

I'm slowly changing things up in the living room to give it an easy, breezy summer feel.

This side table sits next to the sofa. I use it to hold a few items that make me smile. I always worry that I'm adding too much, or too little but this display looks and feels perfect to me.

It always amazes me how a few random items when grouped together have such an impact.

Take a simple white creamer filled with fake flowers . . .

Throw in a few stacked books . . .

And a sweet tiny bird statue.

Together they create a nice looking, uncomplicated display to enjoy.

A Vintage Camera

I am so excited but this recent flea market find. I had a vintage camera on my wish list with no expectations of finding one. Imagine my surprise when I saw this beauty looking back at me.

She's no longer functional and purely for display . . . but what a looker she is!!

Just for fun, I played around on Picnik to give my photos a vintage flair fitting of a camera like this.

I love all the details.

Out of curiosity, I did a little research and the best I can figure it was made somewhere between 1930 and 1940.

I'm not sure where or how I'll eventually display her. Right now I'm just enjoying how much she makes me smile every time I walk by.

A Pretty Spot In The Veggie Garden

I've had a space in the veggie garden begging for my attention.

It's directly opposite the entrance gate and the perfect spot to accent. I had placed a bench and a birdhouse in an attempt to pretty it up. An improvement - yes, but still seemed like a whole lot of privacy fence to look at. Not the look I was going for.

I needed something to break up all that fence and give the eye something to focus on until the plants in the garden had time to grow and take some of the pressure off this spot.

I enlisted the help of two trellis panels. They were black, which doesn't show up in the garden well, so I painted them white. Then using leftover edging bricks I made a narrow long bed along the base of the fence. Next I transplanted a clematis vine into the space and wove it around the trellis. After replacing the bench (which helps keep the clematis base in the shade - which it loves) and adding a few other elements I now have a space that looks like this!

The vine seems to like it's new location. I'll need to eventually add another one to fill in the other side of the trellis, but I'm still figuring out what to add. I did try planting a few morning glories but I think I soaked the seeds too long. Maybe I'll have better luck next year.

The bench was given to me by my mother a few years back. I love how the paint is chipping off, leaving behind perfectly pretty weathered wood.

The birdhouse I purchased at a garage sale years ago. It's seen better days, but I love it's roughed up appearance.

I also added a rusty old bucket. The bottom is almost all rusted out, but it works perfectly for an accent piece.

I love how all three play together so well.

So there you have it. I really like how this turned out. I think I achieved my goal, which is a great feeling to have.

A Summer Hutch

Yesterday I showed you the chippy chicken I've displayed in my hutch and today I thought I share a few more addtions I've made to the hutch.

With all the yard and garden work I've been doing, decorating the inside of my house has been completely ignored. And cleaning . . .well lets just say if we have clean clothes to wear and food in the fridge we're doing ok, right?

After a frenzied day of cleaning I was ready to "summerize" the house and I thought the hutch would be a great place to start.

I grouped together some of my current favorite things trying to keep everything looking light and fresh felling. The addition of green and blue mingled in between all the white gave me the fresh, carefree look I was going for.

Thrift Store Mini Makeover

A recent trip to the Thrift Store turned up this wood tray . . . or maybe it's a bowl. Whatever you'd prefer to call it I thought it could be a useful addition to our home. After a small makeover that is.

I slapped on some of my favorite white paint in Cottage White. Knowing that I wanted a distressed look, I didn't take much time to paint carefully. Just a quick two minute job, then set it aside to dry. After a couple of days I came back to it and started distressing. I got a little carried away on one side and after realizing I liked it I had to continue onto the remaining three sides.

I like that it now looks like it's been used for years.

I decided it could help to add a little rustic flare to my hutch. I placed my chippy chicken inside and surround her feet with fake greenery and berries.

The perfect display for spring. Oh wait - - it's summer now right?

Wildflowers

With spring officially behind us, I thought you might like to see some of my favorite photo's taken down at the cabin.

Springtime in the woods an amazing thing.

Everything is so green and the wildflowers are everywhere growing in big clumps.

It so beautiful.

There are purple flowers . . .

and pale pink.

A few white flowers . . .

and many yellow ones.

All the different shades of green fascinates me. . .

I enjoy taking my time and slowly driving my ATV around the woods.

With views like this, who wouldn't!
