Creating A Studio Space

Some of you may recall how I've been working to transform our family room into a space that functions better for us as a family.  It's been a slow moving project, one that I work on here and there whenever I have a chance.  The room itself is large and "L" shaped, taking up most of the downstairs area of the house.

I decided to use one section of the room to carve out a studio space for the girls and I.  Truthfully, it's more for me than them but I'm sure they will use it also.  In the past all crafting, sewing, painting, etc has been done at the dinning room table.  You can probably imagine my excitement at just the thought of having a dedicated area for such activities!

I challenged myself to create the studio area with only what I already had.  No new purchases were allowed!

Would you like a tour?

First lets start with a look at the space as a whole.

In the corner I placed my favorite ticking striped slip-covered wing chair.  I love to sit in this chair to do needle work.  The girls will hang out in it and chat with me as I work.  The side table is a vintage typewriter desk.  Above the chair I added a small collage of items.  An enamel number, two framed vintage postcards with pretty writing on them and a sketch by my eldest daughter.

Our old kitchen table is now my work space.  I covered it with a section of red duck cloth to protect the table from messy items like glue and paint.  The enamel bowl is used to hold bits of paper, fabric straps, or thread that needs to be thrown away.  I like having it up on the table within easy reach.

Behind the table two Ikea shelves I've had for years were placed together to hold and organize my supplies.  It works perfectly to hold my sewing machine, a wire basket to corral supplies for up coming projects, a basket with my sewing supplies and two storage boxes.  One box holds all my sewing items like ribbon, zippers, thread, lace, etc.  The other holds items like wood shapes, stamps and ink pads, paper punches and my glue gun.

I thought long and hard about what to place above the storage shelves.
I knew I wanted something that I could use to display my growing collection of vintage sewing supplies.  Since most of the items are so small I figured a cubby shelf was the perfect solution.

I plan to talk more about how I built the cubby shelf tomorrow if your interested in stopping by for a tutorial.  For now I'll just tell you the whole thing was made with scrap 1X4's and I just love how it turned out.

**Update:  You can see how to build one here**

Today we'll just concentrate on the fun stuff  - - what I've displayed!

I chose to display a mixture of favorite items and vintage sewing notions.

The hooks on the bottom will come in handy I'm sure as I start to use the studio more.

So there you have it, my new studio space.  I'm so tickled about it, I want to spend all my time here.

Even hubby gave it his approval with a curt "Huh, that's a good idea".
Such high praise!

Have a great day everyone,

Robin

  2. Wow! It's such a lovely space! I'd love to spend time in there too. I love how you take everyday items and somehow turn them into art. So pretty! And then to get praise from your hubby is most excellent! :o)

I'm hoping to repaint our family room soon and I love the shade you have on your craft room walls. Would you mind sharing the name of the color?

    Blessings!

  4. Love it, Robin. I like that it is where it is convenient and bright. You have done a fine job of setting it up so that you and your girls can use it. I am relegated to the basement because I am SUCH a mess when I sew or craft. If it were on the first floor of our house I would be constantly "neatening" things up and it would drive me nuts. As it is, my ugly downstairs space drives me nuts! lol. Your space looks GREAT- xo Diana

  14. It all looks wonderful - I'm sharing you on my Facebook page! Thanks for linking up at Knick of Time Tuesday!
(p.s. - you may want to start watermarking your photos, since there's a big problem right now with some websites using photos and not providing links back - so it looks like THEY created something that could have been yours, and it gets pinned on Pinterest without anyone knowing who the original source was). Just a tip!
