The Great Paint Debate

There's a paint color battle raging at our house.
Hubby wants color . . . .
I want creamy white!
One thing we both agree on ...
the yellows got to GO!!!!!
Here's a photo one of the kids took around Christmas time of the Living Room.

We have this same color on all the walls in the main rooms of the upstairs which includes the kitchen, living room/dinning room, hallway and entryway.
It's been a great color but after three years I'm ready for a change.
I love the color (Milk Paint by Behr) on the walls in the Master Bedroom. . .

It's so relaxing and I love the way whichever color I choose to accent with pops.  Hubby on the other hand has never been a fan which makes me hesitate to paint a big chunk of the house this color however much I would like to.
My vision for our house is a light filled, cheerfully and comfortably decorated space with pops of my seasonal favorite colors along the lines of something like this . . .

All the above rooms have white walls, rustic or vintage flare and pops of color.
Love, love, love it.  Plus it's very similar to our bedroom which I like.

But then since hubby's not crazy about the white walls (calls it boring) I've broadened by focus a tiny bit.

Maybe creamy tan walls should be the direction to move towards.  It would probably make hubby more happy and I could still use pops of color.

If the decision were up to you. . . . what would you do?
Would you pick the white that makes your heart sing and puts a smile on your face
or
would you pick the tan color which would be a little more "family friendly"?

Please help this poor girl make up her mind.  Would love to hear about any paint colors that have worked for you.

Robin

  1. I usually have the biggest say on decorating our home (hubs usually just goes with the flow). So, when he does speak up, I try to see things his way and incorporate it, too. It is his home as well, so we try to meet in the middle. (Unless, of course, he wants to pull out all his orange tractors. He hasn't won that battle yet). :) Good luck!

  2. I am lucky I decide on all decorating decisions. My husband has been happy with what ever I do.Even when I was into my pink phase.I am about to re-paint our entire home myself. And I am going with a much lighter color. Not WHITE but a creamy light soft white.Hope you can both get together with a solution.

  3. I am in the very same situation! I picked out all of my paint colors 5 years ago when building our house and now some of them make me cringe when I look at them. I'm trying to get up the courage to paint my dining room this weekend. It is a terra cotta/orange color. I've been dreaming of an all white room for some time. I keep going back and forth on if I should paint and what color. I keep hearing that little voice that tells me to go for the white room I've been wanting. Good luck to you! Robin

  4. I painted all our walls white in the entire house except for a few areas which will be white soon. My hubby thought it would look like we lived in a looney bin but after all was said and done he really liked it. I really like the pale beige too, it is a neutral color that you can still add your color. Maybe you can find the palest of pale. :)
    Good luck!

  5. White reminds me to much of sterile hospital rooms. I like white for accent, trim and furniture, but for the walls I want color! I am about to paint several rooms in my home because the previous tenant painted everything matte tan and I hate it. I think the color is awful and depressing. I am looking at a warm light aqua blue for the living room and something in the shade of green for my bedroom.

  6. Finding the balance with those that share the same address as us white lovin' girls can be challenging. I'm currently going through it with my daughter Hannah and her bedroom makeover. I respect that your hubby has a yearning for some colour, however, I hope he comes around to allowing the colour to come in the form of accessories. The way I convinced my hubby was I used the trump card of....money. I reminded him of how much I like to change things around the ol' homestead and that with a neutral palette of white on the walls, well, we'd never need to paint again! It worked! Good luck and keep us posted! Much love,Lisa

  8. It's hard when you have your heart really set on something. He would probably like it in the end but men seem to have a more difficult time visualizing things. Maybe wait until there is something he really wants (like going on a golf trip or something) and then you can use that to bargain for the paint color ~ only in the most loving way, of course : )! That worked for me when we were first married. Now I just get my way!

  9. Well, I'm all for color! I love bright accent walls. I wouldn't paint my whole room one of those colors, but one wall is beautiful. We sold our home and have decided at our age, we don't want to be homeowners any longer. We something breaks or goes wrong, we just want to make a phone call to have someone come fix it. We don't want to have to do all that any longer. We'd rather put our $$ into travel and fun. HOWEVER, with this rental home came ALL white walls except in the family room there is one accent wall with color and I love it. I walk around the rest of the house and even though I love this house, the walls make it look a bit drab. I've really had to add color to all my decor. So that's my vote, ADD COLOR!

  10. I love White, and personally think it is more versatile, cheery, and more interesting than tan! All my walls are tan, and it just gets old with everything brown brown brown. I would get all the white chips from the store and hang them on the wall... The nicest thing about white is that all accessories, pillows and furniture will go with it beautifully. I agree with Joanne above, wait until your husband really wants something, then bargain :). He may find that he enjoys the white after all is said and done. Follow your gut, you'll make the right decision! Heidi

  11. I too, gravitate towards the lighter and brighter colours. I'd say that if it's a huge deal to your hubby, I'm sure you can find a compromise some way (eiter with a change in colour, or doing white in certain rooms, and darker in others). If it's his preference, but not a huge heartbreak for him, I'd say paint it white, and if he hates it, repaint =) While a pain, I bet once he sees the final result, his opinion will change!

  12. I am so very lucky, because, for the most part, my husband doesn't care. He just gets very irritated with me when I can't make up my mind. I have a horrible time choosing the "right" color. And, if the color is not perfect, it drives me crazy! Anyway, I adore the color in your bedroom! Is there any way you could strike a deal with hubby? lol!

  13. Could you do just the living room in the tan color and the rest of the upstairs areas in your white? That way he gets a little color in the main room, but you'll still have the look you want. Or just paint it white while he's at work and see if he notices when he gets home.

  14. I'm switching our rooms to creamy white. I'm sick of the color. My husband let me paint which ever color I want as long as he does not have to help in the painting. This makes the process much longer but he is always working out of town so I have to do it myself anyway. Maybe your husband wouldn't mind the paint color if you did the painting yourself? I also painted "sandstone" which sounds like a color but really is just white. When my husband said it looked like white, I replied, "nope, it's sandstone". Ha! Poor thing, I run circles around him. Good luck with yours and I can't wait to see what you decide.

  15. Well, Robin, it looks like we have similar dilemmas. I love white rooms too, but the problem with my house is that I don't have painted woodwork and I don't think white walls look as good without them. Now that I painted my dining room, I want to repaint the whole house and the Mister is definitely not on board with that idea, he acts like we just painted and we didn't...it was almost six years ago. I'm going to send you a separate email :)

  16. Hi Robin,
I would probably go the tan route, those inspiration photos are great and if you use lots of white with them the white really pops and there is still no color to deal with. This debate is going on at my house, too, and that is probably what I will do. Let me know what color you come up with.

  17. I can't wait to see what you decide on; I am sure it will be beautiful what ever you choose. I too love your inspiration photos, maybe you can compromise with your hubby and go more toward a creamy white rather than stark. Boys....how do we manage with them; they just don't get it sometimes. :)

  18. It is a tough one, a compromise is the best way, if he chooses the wall color does he get anymore choice in the accent colors. As my husband does not do any of the painting he really doesn't mind what color it is, but I do try to bring in accent colors that he will like. I love all of the inspiration photos.
