Hi Robin, it was nice 'meeting' you over at MLJ. I wore the Milwaukee brace for 3 years during adolescence (14-17), and one of my daughters wore what sounds like your model, the Boston brace, for just over 2 yrs. Neither of us had surgery, although I was a candidate for it. I always wondered what kind of restrictions having the rods would've caused insofar as range of motion. I actually went on to dance as a ballerina for 17 yrs. I still have good motion, just normal aches and pains with age. I sure hope to never stop moving! Sounds like you handled it all very well, and are very active, and that's awesome!
