Adding Some Pretty

My dining room table is a constant source of frustration to me.

The color gives me the hebe-jeebies every time I look at it.
(hubby is strongly against painting it)

My sister insists that it's not "that bad".
The more I fixate on it the more I'm convinced that it doesn't fit the look I'm going for.

It's either cleared off and boring like today
 ~or~
cluttered with unfinished projects, sewing supplies, homework, and who know what else.

This weekend I figured it was time to give this hard working table a little TLC
- and try to cover up a little of the ugly.

I dug around in my sewing supplies and came out with some left over dropcloth fabric.

Inspired by all the wonderful ruffled table runners I've seen around blogland,
I decided to make myself one.

I kept the edges raw to add a little texture and I think she turned out very well.

A little pretty. . .

ahhhhh, so much better!

Hope you all have a great day,
Robin

  1. I am in love with drop cloth fabric right now! I love your table runner and you did such a great job with the ruffle. I find them very hard to do!

  2. I feel the exact same way about my big old ugly oak table. We bought it when my oldest was a baby, and my taste has way changed since then. In the meantime, I guess I will have to live with it! Runners do help, and yours is particularly pretty!

  3. Little touches can make such a big difference. Very pretty! I didn't think it was so bad before though. ;)

  4. Very cute! I hate the wood color of my table too! I'm just waiting until my husband goes hunting and it's definitely getting painted once and for all!

  5. I think we have the same UGLY dining room table (hom furniture a ala 1997!)....but it is sturdy and has the leaves that store so nicely and can fit a massive crowd and I too want to paint it - I'm thinking a distressed black probably later this winter....Love the ruffle topper you used to pretty it up! It's fine for now until I find a lovely sturdy farm table to replace it! dreaming!

  6. It's destiny that we met Robin! LOL We have THE EXACT SAME dining room table. I too am thoroughly NOT in love with the finish. I never take photos in the dining room because of it. I love your ruffly runner....it adds so much to the table!!
I think you need to host a linky party for everyone with big ugly oak tables...then we can all spring our makeovers on our hubbies at the same time! HA HA HA I've mentioned making over our table to my husband several times...to which his comment is always "Well you'd BETTER make it look good or I'll be in trouble." It was his folks' table.

  7. Hi Robin,
Your new runner is really lovely! Isn't it amazing what can be done with drop cloth fabric? I love that red bench at your table. I completely understand your frustration with the golden oak and a man who loves wood...but that is just life. Sometimes we have to think outside of the box, think about perhaps putting chair pads made out of the same material with a ruffle, on your golden oak chairs. I LOVE the black one!
Thanks for your sweet comments today.
    Hugs, Cindy

  8. I just purchased a table almost the same exact color and my heart is torn just as yours is. I'm itching to paint it but it will be a LOT of work. I love the table runner idea. I think that's what I'll do too, at least for now. Thanks so much! I'm now following!

  12. You did such a beautiful job on your runner. Those men - they have such trouble painting wood. I just bought a wooden bench at a resale shop and a old lady at the store was shocked that I was going to paint it. How could I? So then I had to add insult to injury and let her know that not only was I going to paint it - I was distressing it as well! Maybe "surprise" him someday! Have a good day!
